Flavor, music, and tradition in the historic center of Avetrana
The Polpetta Festival is one of the most deeply rooted and beloved gastronomic events in the Municipality of Avetrana, a small village in the Salento area of the Province of Taranto, at the extreme southern tip of Apulia. Born in the late nineties through the initiative of a historic local establishment, the festival has grown over the years to become one of the most awaited summer events in the area, drawing thousands of visitors to the heart of Avetrana's historic center.
The absolute star of the evening is the Avetrana meatball, prepared according to a family recipe jealously guarded and passed down from generation to generation. Each year, a culinary workshop reveals the traditional techniques to the public, while stands distribute the famous meatballs along with other typical products of Salento. Local wine, artisan markets, and tastings complete a culinary journey rooted in the area's farming culture.
The Polpetta Festival is not just about gastronomy: the evening transforms into a grand celebration of Salento folk music. Pizzica pizzica workshops, folk band concerts, and the overwhelming energy of tambourines bring Piazza Vittorio Veneto to life until late at night, in an atmosphere that evokes the rhythms of the Notte della Taranta and the most authentic traditions of Salento.
Admission to the event is free. Alongside the food stands and concerts, there are games and entertainment for children, local craft markets, and entertainment moments that make the festival suitable for all ages.
Situated between the Ionian coast and the Arneo countryside, Avetrana preserves a cozy and charming historic center, the ideal setting for an event that intertwines the flavors, sounds, and memories of the territory. Today, the Polpetta Festival represents an important piece of the town's cultural identity and the Salento summer, showcasing the gastronomic and musical traditions of Apulia.
The 2026 edition marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Polpetta Festival. The event has already been announced by the organizers and will be held, as per tradition, in mid-August in Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The exact date and detailed program have not yet been released: as every year, culinary workshops, tastings, markets, and a long evening of pizzica and folk music are expected.
The 25th Polpetta Festival of Avetrana is in preparation for the summer of 2026. The organizers have confirmed the return of the event to the heart of the historic center, in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, with the usual formula that combines gastronomy, tradition, and folk music. The detailed program, guest artists, and exact date will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
Avetrana can be reached by car via the SS7 ter and the provincial roads connecting the Salento area of Taranto to Manduria and Nardò. The nearest train station is Manduria (Ferrovie del Sud Est line), about 15 km away; the reference airports are Brindisi-Salento and Bari.
Free admission. The event takes place in the evening, from late afternoon until late at night, in the historic center and Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
We recommend arriving early to park near the center and experience the entire program, from the culinary workshops to the folk music concerts.
