A grand celebration of young musicians in the heart of the Monti Dauni
The Florestano Rossomandi International Music Competition is a highlight of the spring season, transforming Bovino, in the province of Foggia, into the Apulian capital for young musical talent. The village, set among the Monti Dauni and recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, welcomes instrumentalists, singers, choirs, and orchestras from across Italy and beyond to the Town Hall Council Chamber in Piazza Municipio.
The event is named after Florestano Rossomandi (Bovino, 1867-1923), a pianist, composer, and educator native to the town, best known for his celebrated piano teaching method. The competition preserves his legacy and promotes his pedagogical approach, focusing on the development of young musicians—from the 'Little Hands' categories for children to those already embarking on professional careers.
Organized by the Academia Vibinensis 'Florestano Rossomandi' music association, with the patronage of the Municipality of Bovino and the support of the local Pro Loco, the competition features sixteen categories covering nearly every instrumental and vocal family: piano, strings, winds, harp, guitar, percussion, accordion, opera and modern singing, piano four-hands, chamber music, piano performance, and choirs, as well as sections for middle school music programs, music high schools, and mixed orchestras. International soloists and ensembles may also participate online via video submission.
The auditions take place before a jury of professors and concert performers, coordinated by artistic director and pianist Rosaria Dina Rizzo. Each performance is evaluated on a 100-point scale, with diplomas awarded for first, second, third, and fourth place, alongside numerous cash prizes named after figures significant to the local musical scene. The event concludes with the winners' concert, where the top-ranked performers showcase their talent to the public. Winners are also awarded concert opportunities in cities ranging from Lucera and Ordona to Assisi and Genoa.
Set in a historic medieval village complete with a co-cathedral and a ducal castle, the Rossomandi Competition is more than just a contest: it is an opportunity to bring classical music to life in the small towns of inland Apulia and to welcome families, teachers, and enthusiasts from every region.
In 2026, the Florestano Rossomandi International Competition returned to Bovino on the weekend of May 16-17, engaging with the 'Bovino Borgo Green Festival' project, created to enliven the area through music and art. The music of the participants provided a backdrop for the village-wide initiatives, blending the tradition of the musical competition with the promotion of the Daunian landscape.
As per tradition, the competition sections welcomed soloists, chamber ensembles, choirs, and school or conservatory orchestras, with auditions open to the public in the Town Hall Council Chamber.
The 2026 edition was integrated into the Bovino Borgo Green Festival program, with contestants' music resonating throughout the village streets. The list of winners is announced by the organization at the conclusion of the trials.
Auditions and the winners' concert are held in the Bovino Town Hall Council Chamber, located in Piazza Municipio in the historic center (Foggia province, Apulia).
Bovino can be reached by car via the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (Candela exit) or the SS90 state road. The Bovino-Deliceto railway station is located on the Foggia-Naples line.
The competition is organized by the Academia Vibinensis 'Florestano Rossomandi' (Via dei Carbonari Dauni 3, Foggia). Applications should be sent via email to [email protected]. Fees vary by category. Admission for the public to both auditions and the final concert is free.
