The ancient pyrotechnic ritual of the dove in Piazza San Bernardino in Canale, in the heart of the Roero region.
The Flight of the Dove is one of the most distinctive and spectacular traditions of the town of Canale, in the Province of Cuneo, in the heart of the Piedmontese Roero. It takes place in Piazza San Bernardino as part of the patronal feast dedicated to the saint, and every year it attracts curious visitors and enthusiasts of popular traditions from across the region.
The heart of the event is the flight of a pyrotechnic dove which, at 10:00 PM, sets off in a blaze of fire and slides along a cable stretched for about 116 meters across the square, accompanied by fireworks, lights, and music. The crowd watches the dove's path until it returns to the facade of the San Bernardino church, where the device explodes in sparks and flashes. It is a brief but intense spectacle that captures all the charm of a centuries-old ritual in just a few minutes.
According to local rural tradition, the return of the dove is a sign of good harvests for the agricultural year, while its failure to return was interpreted as a bad omen. Historian Baldassarre Molino has documented how the dove represents sacred fire, the Holy Spirit entering rural culture: a rite that intertwines Christian and pagan meanings, with few real analogies in Italy, one being the famous "Scoppio del Carro" (Explosion of the Cart) in Florence.
The tradition of the Flight of the Dove has been documented since at least before 1725. Having disappeared in the early 1960s, it was revived in 2012 thanks to the efforts of the municipal administration, the Peach Fair Board (Ente Fiera del Pesco), and the Confraternity, who collaborate every year to bring this moment of community identity back to life.
Known as the peach capital of the Roero, Canale is a village in the Piedmont region famous for its fruit growing and great local wines. The Flight of the Dove symbolically opens the season of summer events in the town, which culminates in August and September with the historic Peach Fair. Attending the rite means immersing yourself in the most authentic identity of the Roero, amidst faith, tradition, and spectacle.
The 2026 edition took place on Sunday, May 24, 2026, starting at 10:00 PM in Piazza San Bernardino in Canale. The rite, included in the calendar of events for the patronal feast of San Bernardino, saw the pyrotechnic dove slide along the 116-meter cable, amidst fireworks, lights, and music, until the final explosion in sparks. The event, with free admission, was organized by the Municipality of Canale together with the Peach Fair Board and the Confraternity, confirming a living tradition in the heart of the Roero.
