Three evenings of Picentini cuisine and live music in the historic center of Montecorvino Rovella
Flavors of the Picentini Potato is the food and wine event that every summer, in early July, transforms the historic center of Montecorvino Rovella, in the province of Salerno (Campania), into one large open-air dining room. The theme is clear from the name: the Picentini potato, grown on the terraces and hillsides of the Picentini Mountains, a humble, everyday product that is showcased here as a true gastronomic identity.
The format is that of a classic Southern village festival, but with a clear focus: no generic menus, only dishes that Campanian tradition has built around the potato. The food stalls are set up in the town center, near the Town Hall, and remain active every evening from late afternoon until late at night.
The menu is the heart of the event and is built like a small repertoire of Picentini cuisine. Among the most popular dishes:
The logic is that of village street food: you buy tickets at the cash desks, pick up your dishes at the stalls, and eat at the tables set up along the streets and squares of the center.
The gastronomic offerings are accompanied by a lineup of live performances, different for each of the three evenings. Over the years, the stage has hosted Campanian folk music groups, cover bands, comedians, and local storytellers: the selection always favors artists from the province of Salerno and the Cilento area, in line with the event's local vocation. This is when the festival stops being just a dinner and becomes a village celebration, with the square full and an audience of all ages.
The Municipality of Montecorvino Rovella has just over twelve thousand inhabitants and stretches between the Sele plain and the ridges of the Picentini Mountains, about twenty kilometers from Salerno. It is a territory of scattered hamlets and farmhouses — Gauro, Macchia, Votraci, San Martino — where hill farming has endured and where the summer calendar is marked by a dense series of festivals, from the Gauro Ham Festival to the Braciola Festival. Flavors of the Picentini Potato is part of this circuit and is now one of the most popular events.
For those arriving from outside, the festival is also a convenient way to discover the historic center of Rovella, with its alleys, churches, and views of the valley, illuminated and pedestrianized for the occasion.
The festival was born in 2024 and in just a few editions has carved out a stable place in the calendar of festivals in the province of Salerno, with an audience arriving from neighboring towns — Montecorvino Pugliano, Olevano sul Tusciano, San Cipriano Picentino, Giffoni Valle Piana — and from the provincial capital. Its success is explained by a simple combination: affordable prices, recognizable cuisine, open-air spaces, and an organization that focuses on community rather than big names.
For the 2026 edition, the event moved up its usual mid-month date, taking place over the long weekend from Saturday, July 4 to Monday, July 6. The stalls were set up in the town center of Montecorvino Rovella, near the Town Hall, opening every evening from late afternoon.
The gastronomic offering remained faithful to the line of the first editions: exclusively historic Campanian dishes built around the Picentini potato. From first courses — the classic pasta, potatoes and provola and traditional gnocchi — to more substantial main courses, with sfrionzola as the signature dish: pork, potatoes, and papaccelle, served alongside gateau and other local specialties.
Each evening had its own show. Saturday, July 4, featured a concert by the group Diadema; Sunday, July 5, saw the performance of Domenico Monaco Contastorie, a comic journey into Cilento culture and language; Monday, July 6, closed with La Ciurma Cartoon Band, a family-friendly evening built around cartoon theme songs.
Food stalls open all three evenings in the town center, near the Town Hall, starting in the late afternoon. A different live show each night.
Menu available throughout the event: pasta, potatoes and provola; gnocchi; sfrionzola (pork, potatoes, and papaccelle); potato gateau; other local specialties.
Historic center of Montecorvino Rovella (SA), near the Town Hall. The streets involved are closed to traffic during the evenings of the event.
By car: from the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, take the Pontecagnano exit, then the SP road to Montecorvino Rovella (about 20 km from Salerno). Parking is available in areas outside the center, with short walks to the stalls.
Salerno or Pontecagnano station, then local bus or taxi to Montecorvino Rovella.
Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport (Pontecagnano), a few kilometers away; alternatively, Naples-Capodichino, about an hour's drive away.
The food stalls open in the late afternoon and continue throughout the evening. Free entry to the event; tastings are paid for via tickets purchased at the cash desks.
It is best to arrive early to avoid queues at the cash desks on weekend evenings. July evenings in the hills can be cool: a light sweatshirt is useful. For accommodation, there are farmhouses and B&Bs in the Picentini towns and in Salerno, about twenty minutes away by car.
