Devotional bonfires and popular festival in Casalnuovo Monterotaro
Every year, on the evening of May 8th, the small village of Casalnuovo Monterotaro, nestled in the Monti Dauni in the province of Foggia, literally ignites in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel. The Fires of San Michele are one of the community's most cherished traditions: an ancient, collective ritual that unites generations around the glow of the bonfires.
Fire has always been a symbol of purification and a means to banish darkness. In Casalnuovo Monterotaro, this meaning intertwines with the centuries-old devotion to Archangel Michael, the protagonist of the May 8th commemoration which recalls his apparition on the nearby Gargano. The evening begins with Holy Mass in the parish church, followed by the exit of the statue, the blessing, and the evocative procession through the village streets.
As the procession passes, devotional bonfires are lit in four spots in the historic center, which become the beating heart of the festival:
Each square is simultaneously animated by live music, bands, and DJ sets, transforming the entire village into an open-air stage.
Starting at 8:30 PM, the highly anticipated food and wine tour begins, showcasing the typical products of the territory of the Monti Dauni. Among the stands set up along the village streets, it is possible to taste local delicacies in an atmosphere of conviviality that accompanies residents and visitors until late at night.
While rooted in centuries-old devotion, the festival has been reorganized as a modern event thanks to the efforts of the Pro Loco De Rocca and the SS. Pietro e Nicolò Parish, with the patronage of the Municipality of Casalnuovo Monterotaro. The initiative also actively involves younger generations, including primary school students, proving that the Fires of San Michele remain a living and shared heritage of this corner of Puglia.
For the third edition, on Friday, May 8, 2026, Casalnuovo Monterotaro renewed the appointment with the Fires of San Michele. The president of the Pro Loco De Rocca, Mara Cappabianca, recalled how the festival is "a ritual of identity and collective spirit," capable of uniting the entire community around the tradition of the bonfires.
After the Holy Mass at 7:00 PM and the procession of the statue, bonfires were lit in Piazza Plebiscito, Piazza Principessa Elena, Piazza Mazzini, and Via Milazzo. From 8:30 PM, the food and wine tour offered the best of the Monti Dauni, accompanied by music and DJs in the various squares of the village.
Casalnuovo Monterotaro is located in the Daunian Subappennino, in the province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached via the SS17 and the provincial roads of the Monti Dauni; the nearest train stations are on the Foggia line, from which you can continue by bus.
The festival takes place on the evening of May 8th, with Holy Mass starting at 7:00 PM and the opening of the food and wine tour at 8:30 PM.
Access to the celebrations and bonfires is free. Tastings along the food and wine tour can be purchased at the stands.
