A week of ritual bonfires in the historic center of Giovinazzo
The Fires of Saint Anthony Abbot represent one of the most deeply felt identity-defining moments for the community of Giovinazzo, a coastal town on the Adriatic in the province of Bari, Apulia. Every year, during the week surrounding January 17th, the historic center lights up with traditional bonfires, scattered not in a single spot but across various corners and streets of the city, each with its own unique character. Families, associations, and visitors gather around the fire in a collective ritual that unites devotion, social connection, and popular memory.
The festival is listed in the Regional Register of fire-related festive rituals of the Apulia Region (R.R. 1/2018), which protects and promotes celebrations where fire plays a documented cultural and symbolic role. Saint Anthony Abbot, the patron saint of animals and the home hearth, is at the heart of an ancient devotion: the fire recalls the temptations overcome by the saint and takes on a purifying value at the beginning of the new year.
The highlight is the final Sunday, when the Great Bonfire is lit in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, accompanied by a street band and the characteristic 'Fire Train' that connects the various bonfires in the city center. In the morning, in Piazza Costantinopoli, the evocative blessing of the animals takes place, featuring the figure of Saint Anthony Abbot and the Town Crierโone of the most beloved and well-attended rituals.
The week offers a rich calendar that goes beyond religious ritual: an itinerant theatrical performance dedicated to Dante's Inferno in the historic center, the reenactment of the 'Expulsion of the Orsini from Giovinazzo' which recalls a local historical episode, the projection of the life and legend of Saint Anthony on the facade of Palazzo Devenuto, and live concerts ranging from singer-songwriter music to rock. There are also meetings in schools and visits to nursing homes, testifying to the strong social roots of the event.
Along the streets of the historic center and in the squares animated by the bonfires, it is possible to taste traditional local foods, including gastronomic tastings and products from the Apulian territory. The food area, set up in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, accompanies shows, concerts, and projections, making the festival an experience that engages all the senses.
Organized by the Municipality of Giovinazzo with the Department of Culture and Tourism and the JoBra Cooperative, the event attracts residents and visitors from neighboring towns in the metropolitan city of Bari every year. The Fires of Saint Anthony Abbot are the ideal opportunity to discover the charm of the ancient village of Giovinazzo overlooking the sea, in one of its most authentic and engaging expressions.
The 2026 edition, organized by the Municipality of Giovinazzo with the JoBra Cooperative, took place from January 12th to 18th. The week alternated cultural events and popular rituals, culminating on the great Sunday of January 18th with the blessing of the animals, the lighting of the Great Bonfire, and concerts in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. The common thread of the edition was the 'Dite Inferno' project, an itinerant street theater performance dedicated to Dante's Inferno in the historic center.
By car: Giovinazzo can be reached via the SS16 Adriatica; the historic center and the event squares are a short distance from the main city parking lots.
By train: The Giovinazzo station is served by the Adriatic line (Trenitalia) and the Ferrovie del Nord Barese, with frequent connections from Bari.
By plane: The Bari-Palese 'Karol Wojtyla' airport is about 15 km away.
Events in the squares (bonfires, blessing of the animals, concerts, projections) are free and open to the public. For some itinerant theatrical performances (such as those in the historic center), tickets can be purchased on VivaTicket.
Warm winter clothing is recommended, as events take place outdoors on January evenings. The historic center is pedestrianized: wear comfortable walking shoes to move between the various bonfires.
