The ritual bonfire in the Pacitti area of Villa Latina, blending Samnite heritage, folk tales, and the flavors of the Comino Valley.
Every year in early May, the Pacitti area of Villa Latina—a small village in the Comino Valley, province of Frosinone—is illuminated by the Fire of Saint Michael. The heart of the event is a great bonfire, a symbol of purification and rebirth linked to the veneration of the Saint. Local accounts describe it as a "true collective ritual," designed for the entire community, adults and children alike.
The festival is more than a simple patronal feast: it echoes the ancient Samnite world and the Ver Sacrum, or "sacred spring." Since the 4th century BC, the hills of central-southern Italy have been lit by fires during May nights. The Samnites would consecrate everything born in spring to the god Mamers, and firstborns, upon reaching adulthood, would set out into the unknown guided by a sacred animal to found new communities. Villa Latina itself guards this memory; the territory served as a refuge for Samnites who escaped the Battle of Aquilonia in 293 BC, and the village was founded around the year 1000 under the name Agnone. With the arrival of Christianity, these May fires became linked to the figure of Saint Michael the Archangel, celebrated on May 8th in memory of his apparition, as is still the case in many Apennine towns.
The festival program follows a well-established ritual. In the late afternoon, there is plenty of space for children with traditional folk games. As night falls, the night hike begins with headlamps, during which participants are enchanted by the tales of "fattariégl" and "R'nsacc," figures and stories of local folklore passed down through generations. The grand finale is the blessing and lighting of the Fire of Saint Michael, the most anticipated and evocative moment of the evening, as flames rise over the Pacitti hill.
Around the bonfire, the festival becomes an occasion for conviviality. Food stalls offer traditional dishes, zero-kilometer products, and local desserts prepared according to ancient recipes, accompanied by pasta, sandwiches, and local wine. The evening is enlivened by live music; the 2026 edition features the band Fratelli Rocca and Tony Cardone with Stefano Bf on stage.
The municipality of Villa Latina, nestled in the fertile basin of the Comino Valley at the foot of the Mainarde mountains, is a concentration of Ciociaria traditions. Here, ancient crafts like woodworking and the zampogna (bagpipe) making survive, alongside cheeses and pastoral products. The Fire of Saint Michael is the ideal opportunity to discover this authentic corner of Lazio, a short distance from Atina, Picinisco, and the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise.

Villa Latina is located in the province of Frosinone, in the Comino Valley. It can be reached by car from the Cassino exit of the A1 motorway, continuing on the SS 627 della Vandra towards Atina/Sora. The Pacitti area is signposted from the town center. The nearest train station is Cassino, with subsequent COTRAL bus connections.
Admission to the festival is free; food and drinks at the stalls are for purchase. For the night hike, a headlamp is required and advance registration is recommended. As it is an outdoor evening on a hill, comfortable shoes and a warm layer are advised, even in May.
