The Sicilian cross country running championship in Syracuse
The FIDAL Sicily Regional Individual Cross Country Championships represent the most anticipated event of the regional winter athletics season. Organized by the Italian Athletics Federation (FIDAL) Sicily with the operational support of the Siracusatletica club, the event awards regional cross country titles and takes place in Syracuse, the provincial capital in the heart of south-eastern Sicily.
The competition is hosted at the Ippodromo della Società Ippica Siracusana, a spacious and traditional venue that allows for a technical and selective course, designed to test athletes' endurance and tactical awareness. The grassy terrain and natural elevation changes inherent to cross country require specific skills, distinct from track racing, making this one of the most exciting disciplines of the winter.
The event features all federal categories, from youth divisions up to senior level. The program includes Esordienti relays, individual races for Ragazzi/e and Cadetti/e, as well as Allieve/i, Junior, Promesse, and Senior races for both men and women. For youth categories, both individual titles and the Club Championship (CdS) are at stake, with points awarded to the most well-rounded teams. The top-ranked Cadetti and Cadette also qualify for the national stages.
Regional cross country is a staple of the Sicilian winter calendar, and Syracuse is one of its historic venues. The event draws hundreds of athletes from every province on the island—from Palermo to Catania, Messina, and Ragusa—turning the racetrack into a grand celebration of sport. It is a significant event for the Province of Syracuse and for all of Sicily, serving as a crucial stepping stone toward the Italian Cross Country Championships.
The 2026 FIDAL Sicily Regional Individual Cross Country Championships were held on Sunday, February 8, 2026, in Syracuse at the Ippodromo della Società Ippica Siracusana.
