The volunteer fire brigade festival of Selva dei Molini, in the heart of the Aurina Valley
The Feuerwehrfest Mühlwald is the summer festival hosted by the Volunteer Fire Brigade (Freiwillige Feuerwehr) of Selva dei Molini/Mühlwald, a small mountain municipality in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, in Trentino-Alto Adige. Nestled at an altitude of approximately 1,229 meters in the side valley of the Puster Valley, within the Tures and Aurina district, the village is entirely surrounded by the peaks of the Zillertal Alps, dominated by the Gran Pilastro (Hochfeiler), which reaches nearly 3,510 meters. In this alpine setting, the firefighters' festival is one of the most cherished summer events for the local community and the many guests on holiday.
The event is traditionally held on August 15th, the day of Ferragosto and the Assumption of Mary (Mariä Himmelfahrt), a highly significant holiday in South Tyrolean villages. The event takes place outdoors on the festival grounds and involves local associations, starting with the Musikkapelle Mühlwald, the local brass band that opens the celebrations with a midday concert.
The program alternates between musical performances and entertainment throughout the day: following the band's concert, various Tyrolean and South Tyrolean folk music groups take the stage, enlivening the afternoon and evening with dance rhythms, concluding with an open-air disco. There is no shortage of food stalls offering traditional South Tyrolean dishes and drinks, a large area dedicated to children with inflatables and entertainment, and the grand afternoon raffle with numerous prizes, one of the most anticipated moments.
Like many volunteer fire brigade festivals in South Tyrol, the Feuerwehrfest has a strong community value: the proceeds support the activities of the fire department, a fundamental safeguard for the safety of an extensive and often rugged alpine territory. Participating means experiencing an authentic piece of the mountain culture of the Municipality of Selva dei Molini, amidst tradition, solidarity, and the typical hospitality of the Aurina Valley.
On Friday, August 15, 2026, Selva dei Molini/Mühlwald celebrates Ferragosto with the volunteer fire brigade festival. The day begins at noon with a concert by the Musikkapelle Mühlwald and continues with folk music, dancing, food stalls, and family entertainment.
Throughout the day: stalls with South Tyrolean specialties, inflatables, and an entertainment program for children.
Selva dei Molini/Mühlwald can be reached by car from the Puster Valley: from the Bressanone motorway exit (A22), continue along the SS49 to Campo Tures and then towards the Selva dei Molini Valley. The nearest train station is Brunico/Bruneck, which is connected to the village by local buses (SAD/Südtirolmobil).
Admission to the festival is free; food, drinks, and raffle tickets are available for purchase.
As this is a summer mountain event, we recommend bringing a warm layer for the evening. There is a wide availability of accommodation in farmhouses and other facilities throughout the Aurina Valley.
