Mirto's devotion to Saints Alfio, Filadelfo, and Cirino
The Festival of the Three Saints, dedicated to the martyrs Alfio, Filadelfo, and Cirino, is one of the most cherished events in the religious and cultural calendar of Mirto, a small town in the Nebrodi area of the province of Messina, Sicily. Every year, on May 9th and 10th, the entire community unites around its patron saints in a celebration that blends faith, memory, and tradition.
According to tradition, Alfio, Filadelfo, and Cirino were three brothers killed during the persecutions of the early centuries of Christianity. Their cult is deeply rooted throughout Eastern Sicily, from the slopes of Mount Etna to the villages of the Nebrodi. In Mirto, this devotion is particularly linked to the history of San Fratello, where the saints' relics were discovered and kept after the year 1000. A portion of these remains and the memory of the three martyrs spread to neighboring villages, giving rise to the festivals still celebrated in May.
The festival begins on the eve, when the award-winning Giuseppe Verdi Band performs its traditional tour through the village streets. In the Church of Sant'Alfio, the Holy Rosary and vespers are recited, followed by the celebration of Holy Mass and the solemn procession of the relics, which travels from the Mother Church, accompanying the statues of the saints through the village.
On the day of the festival, the band performs symphonic marches in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, the heart of the town. At 11:00 AM, a solemn Holy Mass is officiated, followed by the procession of the statues of the three saints through the festively decorated streets. In the afternoon, there is another celebration, while the evening offers moments of conviviality for all ages.
Alongside the religious rites, the festival features a traditional fair: stalls are set up along the streets of the center, offering sweets, toys, handicrafts, and local specialties. It is a time when the village fills with visitors and emigrants returning for the occasion, in an atmosphere of joyful participation that weaves together the sacred and the secular.
After being suspended for a few years due to the pandemic, the Festival of the Three Saints has reclaimed its place in the heart of Mirto, testifying to the strength of an identity bond that spans generations. For those visiting the Nebrodi in spring, it represents an authentic opportunity to discover the religiosity and hospitality of a small village in the province of Messina.
The 2026 Festival of the Three Saints in Mirto was celebrated on Saturday, May 9th (eve) and Sunday, May 10th. The eve was enlivened by the tour of the award-winning Giuseppe Verdi Band, directed by Maestro Manlio Franchina, and by the rites in the Church of Sant'Alfio, with the procession of the relics from the Mother Church.
On the day of the festival, the band performed symphonic marches in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele; at 11:00 AM, the solemn Holy Mass was officiated, followed by the procession of the statues of Saints Alfio, Filadelfo, and Cirino through the decorated streets of the town. In the afternoon, another celebration was held, while the traditional fair with its stalls accompanied the entire day.
Mirto is located in the Nebrodi hinterland, in the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Sant'Agata di Militello or Rocca di Caprileone exit and continuing inland. The nearest train station is in Sant'Agata di Militello, on the Messina-Palermo line.
The festival takes place every year on May 9th and 10th, with the eve on the 9th and the main day on the 10th.
Religious events and the fair are concentrated in the historic center, around the Mother Church and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. It is recommended to reach the village on foot and park in the outer areas, given the high turnout during the festival days.
