The patronal feast of Palo del Colle, blending faith, illuminations, and grand performances

The Festival of the Most Holy Crucifix of Auricarro is the patronal celebration that stops time every year in Palo del Colle, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia. Known by locals as the "Festa Grann" (the Great Feast), it traditionally takes place around the third Sunday of September, transforming the historic center into a stage of light, music, and devotion. For four days, the streets and squares—from Piazza della Minerva to Piazza Santa Croce, and from Piazza Roosevelt to the Mother Church—are filled with worshippers, curious onlookers, and visitors from across the province.
The cult of the Crucifix of Auricarro has roots in a legend passed down for centuries. According to tradition, the sacred image was hidden during the iconoclastic period and later rediscovered in the countryside of Auricarro, where the church of Santa Maria della Croce once stood. A dispute between neighboring towns over the possession of the icon was reportedly settled by letting oxen decide: the animals took the road to Palo del Colle, accompanied—so the legend goes—by a miraculous rain. Since then, the Crucifix has been the patron saint of the city, kept in the Mother Church for most of the year.
Local devotion is divided into two distinct moments. In spring, at the beginning of May, the Santa Croce Festival brings the faithful back to the sanctuary of Auricarro, in the countryside outside the town, with processions, votive carriages, and the distribution of blessed panelle. However, it is in September that the great feast is celebrated: on the first Sunday of the month, the icon is carried in procession from the sanctuary to the Mother Church, where it remains until the following spring, while the third Sunday marks the explosion of the actual patronal festival.
The program balances liturgical and secular dimensions. On one hand, there are solemn masses and processions through the town streets with civil, military, and religious authorities; on the other, the major popular events that make the festival famous throughout the Bari area:
It is a deeply identity-driven festival, capable of drawing back to Palo del Colle even those who have emigrated, who return specifically for the occasion. Those visiting Puglia during this period will find an authentic slice of Southern Italian festive tradition, where the sacred and the profane coexist naturally.
The 2026 patronal feast of Palo del Colle in honor of the Most Holy Crucifix of Auricarro will follow, as per centuries-old tradition, the September calendar, with the climax customarily set around the third Sunday of the month.
At the moment, the official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the Festival Committee, nor has the detailed program of concerts, processions, and performances. The complete calendar is generally released in the weeks preceding the festival via the official website and the committee's social media channels. This page will be updated as soon as the program is made public.
Events are concentrated in the historic center of Palo del Colle (BA): Piazza della Minerva, Piazza Santa Croce, Piazza Roosevelt, Via Umberto I, and the Mother Church. The sanctuary of the Crucifix of Auricarro is located in the countryside outside the town.
By car: Palo del Colle is accessible via the SS96 and SP231 roads, approximately 20 km from Bari. By train: the Palo del Colle station is served by the Ferrovie del Nord Barese (Ferrotramviaria) on the Bari–Barletta line. By plane: Bari-Palese Airport is about 20 km away.
All outdoor square events are free. It is recommended to arrive early for the procession and the final fireworks display.
