About Festival of the Crucifix of Auricarro

The Festival of the Most Holy Crucifix of Auricarro is the most cherished patronal feast in Palo del Colle, within the Metropolitan City of Bari. Every year, around the third Sunday of September, the town comes alive with artistic illuminations, brass bands, and processions: four days of devotion and joy that weave religious rites with concerts, exhibitions, and street performances, culminating in a majestic historical pageant and a spectacular fireworks display. It is a centuries-old tradition that unites faith, music, and community in the heart of Puglia.

The most beloved festival in Palo del Colle

The Festival of the Most Holy Crucifix of Auricarro is the patronal celebration that stops time every year in Palo del Colle, a town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia. Known by locals as the "Festa Grann" (the Great Feast), it traditionally takes place around the third Sunday of September, transforming the historic center into a stage of light, music, and devotion. For four days, the streets and squares—from Piazza della Minerva to Piazza Santa Croce, and from Piazza Roosevelt to the Mother Church—are filled with worshippers, curious onlookers, and visitors from across the province.

Ancient devotion

The cult of the Crucifix of Auricarro has roots in a legend passed down for centuries. According to tradition, the sacred image was hidden during the iconoclastic period and later rediscovered in the countryside of Auricarro, where the church of Santa Maria della Croce once stood. A dispute between neighboring towns over the possession of the icon was reportedly settled by letting oxen decide: the animals took the road to Palo del Colle, accompanied—so the legend goes—by a miraculous rain. Since then, the Crucifix has been the patron saint of the city, kept in the Mother Church for most of the year.

A calendar spanning the seasons

Local devotion is divided into two distinct moments. In spring, at the beginning of May, the Santa Croce Festival brings the faithful back to the sanctuary of Auricarro, in the countryside outside the town, with processions, votive carriages, and the distribution of blessed panelle. However, it is in September that the great feast is celebrated: on the first Sunday of the month, the icon is carried in procession from the sanctuary to the Mother Church, where it remains until the following spring, while the third Sunday marks the explosion of the actual patronal festival.

Faith and entertainment combined

The program balances liturgical and secular dimensions. On one hand, there are solemn masses and processions through the town streets with civil, military, and religious authorities; on the other, the major popular events that make the festival famous throughout the Bari area:

  • Artistic illuminations, among the most spectacular in Puglia, creating arches of light over the streets;
  • Brass band concerts in the bandstand, the sonic heart of every Puglian patronal feast;
  • Square concerts featuring well-known names from the Italian music scene;
  • The closing fireworks display, awaited by thousands of people;
  • Pageants, historical parades, exhibitions, and dance performances organized by local associations and the Pro Loco.

It is a deeply identity-driven festival, capable of drawing back to Palo del Colle even those who have emigrated, who return specifically for the occasion. Those visiting Puglia during this period will find an authentic slice of Southern Italian festive tradition, where the sacred and the profane coexist naturally.
