The grand patronal festival of Galatone, blending faith, tradition, and spectacle
The Festival of the Holy Crucifix of Mercy is the most anticipated event of the year in Galatone, a town in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento. Popularly known as "Ti lu Panieri", the festival attracts thousands of devotees, curious onlookers, and visitors every year who fill the streets and squares of the historic center for four days, from May 1st to 4th.
The spiritual core is the veneration of the Sacred Wood of the Cross, the relic housed in the Sanctuary of the Holy Crucifix of Mercy. The most solemn moment is the Hour of Miracles, featuring the exposition of the Sacred Wood, followed by a grand procession through the city streets, accompanied by brass bands and traditional folk singing.
Alongside the religious rites, the festival showcases the full repertoire of the great Salento tradition: artistic illuminations that transform the town into a blaze of light, itinerant brass band concerts by renowned Apulian ensembles, market stalls lining the streets, and, of course, spectacular fireworks with the famous pyrotechnic competition in Contrada Camene.
The secular program is incredibly rich: from the Salento Food Festival in Piazza San Sebastiano, dedicated to local products and crafts, to the major free concerts that bring big names of Italian music to Galatone every year.
The dialectal name "Ti lu Panieri" ("of the basket") is rooted in local Galatone traditions associated with the festival and has become the affectionate name by which the people of Salento identify this event. The festival is organized by the Committee for the Festival of the Holy Crucifix of Mercy in collaboration with the Sanctuary and the Municipality of Galatone, under the patronage of the Province of Lecce.
Faith, folklore, gastronomy, and great music: the Festival of the Holy Crucifix of Mercy is a concentration of the soul of Salento, a perfect opportunity to discover Galatone and its traditions.
The 2026 edition of the Festival of the Holy Crucifix of Mercy confirmed Galatone as one of the capitals of Salento's patronal festivals, with four days of religious celebrations and entertainment. The highlight of the devotion was the Eucharistic concelebration on May 3rd, presided over by Cardinal Fernando Filoni alongside Monsignor Fernando Filograna. On the secular side, a grand finale featured a free concert by Nomadi in Piazza San Sebastiano.
Artistic illuminations by the Premiata Ditta Antonio Santoro.
The festival is held in the historic center of Galatone (LE), with its epicenter at the Sanctuary of the Holy Crucifix of Mercy and the main town squares: Piazza San Sebastiano (Salento Food Festival and concerts), Piazza Costadura, and Piazza San Demetrio. The fireworks displays are held in Contrada Camene.
Galatone is located about 22 km southwest of Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the SS 101 Lecce-Gallipoli state road. The Galatone train station is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est. During the festival days, the center is partially closed to traffic: it is recommended to park in the peripheral areas and continue on foot.
All events, including the concerts in the square, are free and open to the public.
