The Easter ritual of the encounter between the Risen Christ and the Madonna at the Piano degli Angeli

In the small town of Mongiuffi Melia, nestled in the Agrò valley in the province of Messina, Easter Monday (Pasquetta) is far more than just a day for an outing: it is the day of the Festival of the Angels, also known as the Festival of Peace. This sacred popular representation stages the encounter between the Risen Christ and the Virgin Mary, a ritual passed down through generations that draws faithful, returning emigrants, and visitors to the village every year.
On Easter Monday morning, the statues of the Risen Christ and the Madonna move in procession from their respective village churches. The Virgin, still wrapped in a black cloak—a sign of mourning for the death of her Son—is led toward the meeting place. The two statues slowly approach until they reach the Piano degli Angeli (in local dialect U Chianu di l'Anciuli), once the largest space in the village. It is here that the most anticipated moment occurs: upon receiving the news of the resurrection, the Madonna abandons her black cloak of sorrow to wear a white mantle, while being crowned with flowers and proclaimed Queen of Peace.
The emotional heart of the festival lies with the Angels of Mary: local children, dressed as angels, who welcome the meeting of the two statues with songs and ancient verses in honor of the Virgin. Preparation begins weeks in advance, when the young protagonists are chosen to recite the traditional lines, in a text that blends Latin and Sicilian dialect. It is a legacy proudly guarded by families, who see their children's participation as an intimate bond with their village's history.
The roots of the festival date back to 1830, when Marquis Francesco Rao Corvaja established the so-called Festival of Peace to seal the restored harmony between the two communities of Mongiuffi and Melia, now united as a single municipality. In 1833, the priest Giovanni Cuzari composed the text recited by the youth during the ceremony—eight children, four from each village, symbolizing the union. Since then, the ritual has reached us almost unchanged, a precious testimony of popular religiosity and folklore in eastern Sicily.
The Festival of the Angels is part of the rich calendar of Easter traditions in the village and the nearby locations of the Agrò valley. The spirit of community is renewed around the ritual: the streets of the center come alive, families reunite, and Mongiuffesi scattered across the world return to ensure they do not miss the appointment. For the visitor, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the province of Messina, where devotion blends with the warmth of Sicilian hospitality.
The Festival of the Angels is a fixed event on the calendar of Mongiuffi Melia, tied to Easter Monday (April 6th in 2026). The customary ritual of the encounter between the statues of the Risen Christ and the Madonna at the Piano degli Angeli is expected to take place, accompanied by the songs of the Angels of Mary. The dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced by the Municipality: it is recommended to check the channels of the Municipality of Mongiuffi Melia for updates.
The Festival of the Angels is celebrated every year on Easter Monday in the center of Mongiuffi Melia (ME).
Mongiuffi Melia can be reached by car from the Ionian coast of Messina (A18 Messina-Catania motorway exit) by traveling up the Agrò valley. The nearest train station is Letojanni-Gallodoro, on the Messina-Catania line; from there, continue by car inland.
Admission to the ritual is free. It is recommended to arrive in the morning to witness the entire procession and the meeting of the two statues at the Piano degli Angeli.
