Palazzo San Gervasio celebrates its patron saint against plague victims
August 16th in Palazzo San Gervasio, a village in the Alto Bradano area of the province of Potenza, is a date awaited all year round: it is the day of Saint Roch, the pilgrim saint from Montpellier venerated throughout the Mezzogiorno as a protector against the plague, contagious diseases, and all adversity. The community turns to him for protection, in a devotion that spans generations.
The religious heart of the festival is the solemn mass followed by the procession through the village streets, during which Saint Roch's statue is carried on shoulders amidst crowds of faithful, accompanied by the town band. It is the moment when the people of Palazzo renew their vow to the saint, described as a model of charity towards the sick and poor, and ask for his "powerful protection" for the town.
Alongside the sacred dimension, the festival of Saint Roch is also a grand popular celebration. Musical evenings in the square, with concerts and performances by guest artists, liven up the August nights, while food stalls offer specialties of Lucanian cuisine. To conclude the festivities, the inevitable fireworks light up the Vulture sky.
Organized with the support of the Municipality of Palazzo San Gervasio and the dedicated festival committee, the celebration of Saint Roch is one of those events that bring back home emigrants and the town's children scattered throughout Italy: an extended Ferragosto where devotion, music, and conviviality blend in the warmth of the Lucanian summer.
The 2026 edition of the Festival of Saint Roch in Palazzo San Gervasio will take place around August 16th, the saint's liturgical day. As per tradition, the solemn mass and the procession with the protector's statue will be accompanied by musical evenings, food stalls, and fireworks. The final program, including dates and names of the musical artists, will be released by the festival committee in the weeks prior.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced in the coming weeks by the festival committee and the parish.
