The great Lucanian pilgrimage to San Rocco, twice a year
Few villages in Basilicata experience such intense popular devotion as Tolve does for San Rocco. The town, perched on the hills northeast of Potenza, is a destination for a pilgrimage that draws tens of thousands of faithful from all over the region and from neighbouring Puglia and Campania. The phrase "Tolve is San Rocco and San Rocco is Tolve" summarises an identity bond that profoundly marks the life of the community.
Tolve's peculiarity is celebrating San Rocco twice a year: on August 16th and September 16th. The dual occasion has peasant roots: the September procession was created to allow farmers, busy with fieldwork in August, to participate in their saint's festival. Both days, from 9 am to 8 pm, see the village transform into a river of pilgrims.
The heart of the festival is the procession along Corso Vittorio Emanuele. The statue of San Rocco is carried on the shoulders of the Brothers of Purgatory, who wear the characteristic white tunic and red cloak. Along the route, the faithful fulfil vows and promises, in an atmosphere of deep collective emotion. The streets fill with stalls, lights, and music, as devotion intertwines with popular celebration.
Promoted by the Municipality of Tolve and the Pro Loco (local tourist board), the San Rocco festival is much more than a religious event: it is the moment when the entire Tolve community, including the many emigrated families, comes together around its patron saint. Participating in the pilgrimage means experiencing firsthand one of the most authentic and vibrant expressions of Lucanian popular religiosity.
The official website of the Municipality of Tolve confirms for 2026 the two solemn processions of San Rocco: on August 16th and September 16th, both from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The dual occasion renews the tradition that allows farmers busy in the fields in August to also take part in the saint's festival. The statue of San Rocco is carried on the shoulders of the Brothers of Purgatory along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, amidst vows, prayers, and great popular emotion.
The detailed religious and civil program will be released by the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Tolve in the weeks preceding the event. The confirmed structure of the two days includes:
