The Festa Patronale di San Cristoforo is the most cherished event of the year for Isola del Piano, a small municipality in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino perched among the rolling hills of the Metauro Valley, on the edge of Montefeltro. Here, where the landscape alternates between cultivated fields, badlands, and ancient villages, the community gathers every year around the figure of its patron saint, celebrated according to tradition on July 25th.
San Cristoforo, the giant who, according to legend, carried the Child Jesus on his shoulders across a raging river, has been venerated for centuries as the protector of wayfarers, pilgrims, and travelers. In Isola del Piano, the parish church is dedicated to him; it is the seat of the vicariate of the diocese of Urbino. The current building dates back to 1905 and was built on the pre-existing one from 1613. Inside, behind the high altar, a valuable painting of San Cristoforo attributed to the school of Barocci is preserved, originating from the ancient parish church adjacent to the village tower.
The heart of the festival remains its religious dimension: the solemn Eucharistic celebration and the procession with the statue of the saint, which winds through the streets of the historic center accompanied by the devotion of the inhabitants. Around the liturgical moments, as happens in all the villages of the hinterland, village gatherings come to life, offering opportunities for conviviality and rediscovering the roots of a small community that jealously guards its traditions.
Visiting Isola del Piano during the patronal festival also means discovering a territory with a unique identity. It was here, in the 1970s, that the then young mayor Gino Girolomoni launched one of Italy's first organic farming initiatives, restoring the ancient Monastery of Montebello, founded in 1380 by Blessed Pietro Gambacorta for the Girolamini order. A deep bond between land, spirituality, and community that still makes this corner of the Marche a special place.
The Festa Patronale di San Cristoforo 2026 in Isola del Piano (PU) is scheduled around July 25th, the day the patron saint of the village is remembered in the liturgical calendar. The detailed program โ Mass times, procession route, and any related events โ is usually released in the weeks prior by the San Cristoforo Parish and the Municipality of Isola del Piano.
As this is a festival of a small community in the Marche hinterland, the heart of the event remains its religious and community dimension, with the solemn Eucharistic celebration and the procession with the statue of the saint through the streets of the historic center. It is advisable to consult the official parish channels for confirmation of dates and the program.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. According to tradition, the festival focuses around July 25th, the day of San Cristoforo, with the solemn Holy Mass and the procession with the statue of the patron saint. Times and any convivial moments will be announced by the San Cristoforo Parish in the weeks preceding the festival.
Isola del Piano is reachable by car from the Provincial Road connecting Fossombrone and Montefelcino; the nearest motorway exit is Fossombrone on the A14 / E78 highway (Fano-Grosseto). The nearest train station is Fossombrone-Montefelcino, on the line serving the Metauro Valley.
The festival is linked to the liturgical feast of San Cristoforo, traditionally celebrated around July 25th. It is advisable to check the updated program at the San Cristoforo Parish or the Municipality of Isola del Piano, as dates and times of the celebrations are announced in the weeks prior.
The village is small and quiet: take the opportunity to visit the Monastery of Montebello and discover the local organic farming products. For overnight stays, consider the agriturismo accommodations in the area and nearby towns such as Fossombrone and Urbino.
