The village of the golden Bronzes toasts the Red Gold of Catria
The Festa del Vino Pergola DOC is one of the longest-running and most beloved food and wine events in the Marche region. For over half a century, every year at the end of July, the historic center of Pergola, in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, dresses up to celebrate its most precious wine: Pergola DOC, an intense and fragrant red made from aleatico grapes, nicknamed the "Red Gold" of the village. Organized by the Pro Loco Pergola with the patronage of the Municipality, the festival is an event that attracts thousands of visitors and wine tourism enthusiasts every summer.
The common thread of the event is the open cellars: local establishments, taverns, and wine bars in the historic center open their doors and offer Pergola DOC paired with cured meats, cheeses, typical desserts, and traditional Marche dishes. Along Corso Matteotti and in the village squares, food stands, markets, guided tastings, and raised glasses alternate, creating a convivial atmosphere that involves both adults and children. There are also round tables dedicated to wine tourism and the future of Pergola DOC, providing an opportunity for discussion among producers, institutions, and the territory.
Over the years, the Wine Festival has grown, adding a rich program of collateral events to the tastings: concerts and live music in the evenings, shows and entertainment, exhibitions in churches and historic buildings, walks, and excursions among the vineyards, such as the Camminata del Vino (Wine Walk) and Vino & Bike cycling tours in the surrounding hills. The festival thus also becomes an opportunity to discover the beauty of Pergola, starting with the famous group of Bronzi dorati da Cartoceto (Gilded Bronzes from Cartoceto), the only gilded bronze complex from the Roman era that has survived to our time, housed in the city's museum of the same name.
Nestled among the hills of Monte Catria, in the westernmost part of the province of Pesaro and Urbino, Pergola is listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. Its historic center, made up of alleys, churches, and arcades, provides a natural backdrop for a festival that combines peasant tradition, wine culture, and Marche hospitality. For those visiting the inland Marche region in summer, the Festa del Vino Pergola DOC is the best way to savor the identity of this territory, between a glass of aleatico and a stroll through the village.
