The Marian devotion of Marsico Nuovo

In Marsico Nuovo, in the heart of the Val d'Agri in the Province of Potenza, the Festa della Madonna del Carmine is the most heartfelt occasion for the community after that of the patron saint, San Gianuario. Every year, on the last Sunday of July, the village gathers around the figure of the Virgin in a celebration that intertwines deep popular devotion, religious rites, and traditions passed down from generation to generation.

The Flight of the Angel

The most anticipated and spectacular moment of the festival is the Flight of the Angel: a child, dressed as an angel and suspended by a rope above the crowd, recites verses of homage to the Madonna, symbolically kicking off the solemn procession that accompanies the effigy through the streets of the historic center. It is a tradition of strong emotional impact, which attracts faithful and visitors every year and represents one of the most characteristic popular rites of the Val d'Agri.
