The patron saint and the rite of the Beard of Saint Lawrence among the mountains
Saint Lawrence is the patron saint of Cavargna, a small mountain municipality in Val Cavargna, in the far north of the Province of Como, in a border area between Lake Como and Switzerland. The patronal festival is celebrated on August 10th, the saint's liturgical day, and is one of the most important events of the year for the community of this alpine village.
The element that makes this festival unique is an ancient and highly evocative rite: during the concelebrated Mass, according to tradition, the 'Barba di San Lorenzo' (Beard of Saint Lawrence) is burned. This is a casing filled with cotton wool, hung from the church ceiling. When ignited, the 'Barba' burns rapidly, symbolically evoking the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, who according to tradition was burned alive on a gridiron. It is a ritual act passed down through generations, telling of the deep popular religiosity of Val Cavargna.
The Festa di San Lorenzo is part of the rich calendar of traditions that characterise Val Cavargna, one of the most authentic and least-visited valleys in the Province of Como. Here, religious festivals preserve rites and customs lost elsewhere, constituting an intangible heritage of great value.
Participating in the Festa di San Lorenzo in Cavargna means witnessing a rare rite, immersed in an alpine landscape of rare beauty. The patronal festival is the ideal opportunity to discover this mountain village and to understand the deep bond between the community of Val Cavargna and its most ancient traditions.
In 2026, Cavargna will again celebrate its patron saint, Saint Lawrence, on August 10th, the saint's liturgical day. The central moment of the festival is the concelebrated Mass, during which the rite of the 'Barba di San Lorenzo' is renewed, a unique tradition of Val Cavargna that attracts faithful and curious visitors.
The heart of the patronal festival is the concelebrated Mass in the parish church of San Lorenzo, during which, according to tradition, the 'Barba di San Lorenzo' is burned: a casing filled with cotton wool, hung from the ceiling, which ignites and burns rapidly, evoking the martyrdom of the saint. The precise times of the celebrations will be announced by the parish closer to the festival.
