About Festa della Transumanza

At the beginning of autumn, Ampezzo celebrates one of the oldest mountain rites: the return of the cows from the mountain pastures. The Festa della Transumanza accompanies the descent of the herds from the alpine huts to the valley floor, featuring decorated animals, tastings of Carnia cuisine, farm visits, workshops for children, and music, in a day that tells the story of Carnia's pastoral civilization.

An ancient mountain rite

When the days get shorter and the high-altitude pastures become empty, in Ampezzo, in the heart of Carnia, one of the oldest and most defining gestures of mountain life takes place: transhumance, the return of the herds from the pastures to the stables in the valley. The Festa della Transumanza celebrates this moment, transforming it into a day of celebration for the entire community.

The descent of the decorated cows

The heart of the event is the evocative descent of the cows "dressed for the festival", adorned according to tradition, as they descend from the alpine huts along the paths to the village. A rich program unfolds around this animal procession: visits to the Petris family farm, tastings of the herdsman's lunch, workshops for the little ones, guided walks with shepherds and herds, tractor rides, and live music.

The flavours and culture of Carnia

The festival is also an opportunity to rediscover the mountain's products: alpine cheeses, dairy products, cured meats, and the dishes of Carnia cuisine, in a direct link with the work of the breeders. Organized in Ampezzo (Province of Udine), the Festa della Transumanza combines peasant memory, tradition, and hospitality, offering families and visitors an authentic glimpse into the pastoral civilization of the Friulian Alps.

Festa della Transumanza — edition 2026

The Festa della Transumanza in Ampezzo is expected, as per tradition, in early October 2026: the descent of the herds from the pastures, tastings of Carnia cuisine, farm visits, workshops for children, and music.

The Festa della Transumanza in Ampezzo will be held, as usual, in the first days of October 2026; the exact dates have not yet been announced. In recent editions, the event took place on the first weekend of the month (October 4-5, 2025, and October 5-6, 2024).
