Ferragosto in Italy's smallest municipality, with bonfires and a Marian procession in Valsassina
There's a corner of Lombardy where Ferragosto retains its most ancient meaning: Morterone, in the province of Lecco, Italy's least populated municipality with just a few dozen residents, nestled in Valsassina on the slopes of the Resegone mountain at over a thousand metres' altitude. Here, on August 15th, the feast of the patron saint, the Beata Vergine Assunta, is celebrated, an event that draws residents, holidaymakers, and the many Morterone natives who return for the occasion.
The festival begins on the evening of August 14th, when traditional bonfires are lit in the various hamlets of the village. It's a convivial and communal moment, often accompanied by a charity tombola (bingo) whose proceeds support the parish. The fire illuminating the mountain has always been the signal that the festival has arrived.
On Ferragosto day, the heart of the celebration is the solemn mass in the historic church dedicated to the Virgin Assunta, a building of Romanesque origins housing an altarpiece by Francesco Quaglio from 1742. At the end of the service, the procession begins: the faithful accompany the 17th-century statue of the Madonna through the village streets, stopping at the chapels adorned for the occasion, amidst prayers and Marian chants.
In such a small municipality, the Assumption feast is much more than a religious observance: it is the moment when the entire community of Morterone, in the Province of Lecco, comes together around its identity and roots, in a mountain setting of rare beauty.
In 2026, Morterone will once again celebrate its patron saint on Ferragosto, following an unchanged tradition. On the evening of August 14th, the eve's bonfires will be lit in the hamlets, accompanied by a charity tombola for the parish. On August 15th, the community will gather for the solemn mass in the historic church of the Beata Vergine Assunta and for the procession carrying the 17th-century statue of the Madonna through the village streets, with stops at the adorned chapels and Marian chants.
The program follows the established pattern of the festival:
Times to be confirmed by the parish closer to the festival.
Morterone is reachable by car from Ballabio (Lecco) along the mountain road that climbs into Valsassina; the village is also a destination for hikers from the Resegone. Parking is limited, so it's advisable to arrive early on festival days.
