Locatello and the Assumption

Overlooking the Valle Imagna, in the Province of Bergamo, the Municipality of Locatello is a small village of just over eight hundred inhabitants, whose existence is attested by a document from 975. The town dedicates its patronal festival to Maria Santissima Assunta, celebrated on August 15th, Ferragosto.

The Parish Church, a Treasure Trove of Art

The heart of the festival is the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, in Piazza Libertà. Rebuilt over the centuries on the foundations of a previous building, likely from the 15th century, the church houses 15th-century wooden sculptures and 16th-century paintings, including a work by local artist Andrea Previtali depicting the Virgin and Child with Saints John the Baptist and Jerome. A heritage that also makes the festival an opportunity to rediscover the town's art.

A Ferragosto Festival in the Valley

On August 15th, the patronal day traditionally unfolds between the solemn mass, the community lunch, and the procession with the Assumption in the afternoon, sometimes accompanied by musical moments in the church. The festival coincides with the period when Locatello is most lively: in Piazza Libertà, from July to August, the Sunday market is also held. For those visiting Valle Imagna, the Assumption festival is an opportunity to capture the authentic soul of a mountain village in the heart of summer.
