The spring festival of Cassegliano, between Bisiacaria flavors and peasant tradition
The Festa dei Scussoni is the late May event that enlivens Cassegliano, a hamlet of the Municipality of San Pier d'Isonzo, in the Bisiacaria region halfway between Gorizia and Monfalcone. The name, entirely in dialect, brings smiles and stories: the scussoni are cockchafers, the insects that emerged from the ground in May and with which children of the past played in the fields. A name that is already a declaration of peasant and popular identity.
Everything revolves around the curtivon, the large central courtyard of the village, which for a few days becomes an open-air dining room. Here, the dishes that make the festival famous are served: pasta with boscarin sauce, the traditional Istrian beef, pasta with asparagus sauce - a symbol of Friulian spring - and the unmissable grilled meats cooked over embers. All accompanied by local wines.
The evenings unfold to the rhythm of live music, with local bands and groups ranging from great hits to covers. Saturday is also dedicated to nature, with an ecological walk along the paths bordering the Isonzo River, while for the little ones there are games and face painting. The organizers have also thought about the public's comfort, with a display ordering system to reduce waiting times and accessible spaces for everyone.
Cassegliano and San Pier d'Isonzo are located in the heart of the Bisiacaria, the area of the province of Gorizia between the Isonzo River and the Karst plateau, which preserves a unique dialect and gastronomic traditions. Participating in the Festa dei Scussoni means connecting with this authentic identity, made of good food, hospitality, and a desire to be together.
The 2026 edition of the Festa dei Scussoni takes place on the last weekend of May, from the 29th to the 31st, in the curtivon of Cassegliano. Three days of traditional cuisine, with pasta with boscarin and asparagus sauce and grilled meats, accompanied by live music and the gastronomic offerings of the Bisiacaria region.
Confirmed are the display ordering system to reduce waiting times, accessible spaces, and, among the activities, the ecological walk along the Isonzo River trails and entertainment for children.
