Lipari's borderless square: a world of flavors and rhythms
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Festa dei Popoli — Culinary and Musical Migrations is one of the most cherished autumn events in Lipari, the main island of the Aeolian archipelago in the province of Messina, Sicily. For one evening, the picturesque Marina Corta square, overlooking the sea and framed by the small church of the Anime del Purgatorio, transforms into what the organizers call "a square without a flag, an official language, or a signature dish": a diverse, colorful space where different cultures coexist and influence one another.
The heart of the festival is the long row of food stalls set up by resident and migrant communities living in Lipari and the Aeolian Islands. Visitors can stroll between stands, tasting dishes from Brazil, Ivory Coast, the Philippines, France, Morocco, Pakistan, Romania, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Ukraine, Venezuela, and many other countries. Beyond the food, the festival is defined by music and dance: North African percussion, rhythms from the Global South, dance performances, and flamenco interludes fill the evening until late at night.
The event is conceived and curated by the Magazzino di Mutuo Soccorso, an Aeolian association that engages an increasing number of volunteers each year. The festival has grown with every edition, funded through donations and community support, and serves as a moment of welcome and solidarity rather than just a simple food festival. Each edition carries a message: the most recent was dedicated to solidarity with peoples affected by conflicts.
The Festa dei Popoli is traditionally held in early October, marking the end of the Aeolian tourist season. The event begins in the evening and continues late into the night. It is the perfect opportunity to discover Lipari in a more authentic and local light, far from the summer crowds.
The 2026 edition of the Festa dei Popoli in Lipari is currently in the planning stages. The organizers from Magazzino di Mutuo Soccorso - Eolie have stated their intention to make the event "even more inclusive, horizontal, diverse, and participatory," working to support the project through the municipal participatory budget.
At the moment, neither the dates nor the detailed program for 2026 have been published. Based on previous editions, the event is expected to be held in early October, in the evening, at the Marina Corta square, featuring the customary food stalls from various countries and a musical program showcasing sounds from the Global South. Information will be updated as soon as the organizers announce the details.
Lipari is accessible by sea via hydrofoils and ferries from Milazzo (the main port for the Aeolian Islands), as well as from Messina, Palermo, and Naples during peak season. From the port of Lipari, Marina Corta is just a few minutes' walk away in the historic center.
The event takes place in the public square and is free to attend; food and drinks are purchased directly at individual stalls. The association collects donations to support the event.
As this is an evening event at the end of the season, it is advisable to book ferries and accommodation in advance. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced: it is best to check the Magazzino di Mutuo Soccorso - Eolie channels before planning your trip.
