Pizzoccheri return home

The Festa dei Pizzoccheri in Teglio, in the province of Sondrio, celebrates the symbol dish of Valtellina in the village that invented it. Teglio is universally recognised as the homeland of pizzoccheri — the buckwheat pasta seasoned with savoy cabbage, potatoes, butter, and Casera cheese — and it is home to the Accademia del Pizzocchero (Pizzocchero Academy) which guards the original recipe.

Three days in the pine grove

The sagra takes place in the pine grove of Teglio, a short walk from the Torre de li Beli Miri, the village's symbol. The kitchen naturally offers pizzoccheri, but also sciatt (fried cheese fritters), sausages, chops, cured meats, and local cheeses. The evenings are enlivened by live music and dancing, in a convivial atmosphere that draws visitors from all over the valley and beyond.

A long-standing tradition

Now in its many editions, the Festa dei Pizzoccheri is one of the most anticipated summer events in the alpine Lombardy. Visiting Teglio during the sagra also means discovering a village rich in history, with Renaissance palaces and the famous Palazzo Besta, in a panoramic setting overlooking the Rhaetian side of Valtellina.
