The patron saint of the medieval village in Val Seriana
Perched in the upper Val Seriana, in the Province of Bergamo, Gromo is counted among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy for its medieval historic centre, with its castle, piazza, and ancient stone houses. The town dedicates its patronal festival to Saint James the Apostle, celebrated on July 25th.
The focal point of the celebrations is the parish church of Saint James the Apostle and Saint Vincent the Levite, founded in the 13th century, which houses chapels, a portico, and the old rectory, now home to the parish museum. The patron saint's festival renews the community's bond with this symbolic place of Gromo's history every year.
The feast of Saint James falls in the middle of the summer season, when Gromo is bustling with visitors and the village's many events, from the Summer Music festival to historical reenactments. The patronal festival, with its religious celebrations, is part of this lively calendar and represents the most identity-defining moment for the town's inhabitants. The Gromo tourist office extends its opening hours during the summer holidays to welcome visitors.
