Madonie devotion to the miraculous Crucifix, featuring processions, traditions, and the May Fair
The Feast of the Most Holy Crucifix is the most cherished event in Montemaggiore Belsito, a small town in the Madonie Park in the province of Palermo, Sicily. The local community celebrates its Crucifix twice a year: on May 3rd and September 14th, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The May celebration symbolically opens the festive season, uniting an entire community through faith, memory, and a sense of belonging.
The exquisite wooden statue dates back to the late 15th century. According to local tradition, it was discovered in 1625 by Don Francesco Cangelosi near the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, hidden among ruins and wrapped in the flames of a bush that burned without being consumed: the sacred image emerged completely intact. This miracle sparked a deep devotion, leading Princess Lucrezia Migliaccio to commission a church dedicated to the Most Holy Crucifix in 1676 as a gesture of gratitude for a miraculous healing.
The highlight of the festival is the solemn procession: the wooden float carrying the Crucifix statue is carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the faithful, confraternities, and visitors from across the Madonie region. This is not merely a religious rite, but a true narrative of identity passed down through generations, blending spirituality and folk culture.
The festivities are linked to the traditional May Fair and, on May 1st, to the evocative St. Joseph’s Tables. Around a wooden altar decorated with antique hand-embroidered linen cloths, flowers, laurel, and wheat seedlings, the custom of the "Virgineddi" is renewed—a meal once offered to the poor. The tables feature traditional Madonie dishes: pasta with sauce and wild fennel, rice with lentils, fried cardoons, artichokes, salt cod, and broccoli, alongside typical sweets like pignolata, cannoli, and sfince.
The Feast of the Most Holy Crucifix represents an intangible heritage for Montemaggiore Belsito that unites history, faith, and identity. It is an occasion for gathering and collective memory that keeps the roots of a Madonie community alive, offering visitors an authentic glimpse into the religious and gastronomic traditions of inland Sicily.
