Madonie devotion to the Crucifix of Santa Maria Maggiore, featuring sacred frottole and a barefoot procession
In the town of Isnello, nestled among the Madonie peaks in the province of Palermo, May 1st is the most significant day of the year. The Feast of the Most Holy Crucifix renews an ancient devotion to the venerated Crucifix kept in the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, weaving together faith, sacred music, and folk traditions that make this Madonie village a hidden gem of Sicilian religious identity.
The most distinctive element of the festival is the frottole, 19th-century sacred hymns performed in the afternoon before the evening mass. These compositions of deep spiritual intensity are now inscribed in the Sicilian Region's Register of Intangible Heritage: the most famous is the frottola written by Grisanti set to music by Maestro Graffeo. They are performed by local choirs and musical ensembles, including the historic Francesco Bajardi Musical Band, founded in the late 19th century, which makes its traditional rounds through the village streets at dawn on May 1st.
Following the Solemn Mass, which the confraternity members attend, the most moving moment is the procession. Members of the Assunta Confraternity carry the Crucifix of Santa Maria Maggiore on their shoulders barefoot, dressed in white with a light blue sash and an embroidered cross on their chests. The varicedda also parades—a small float bearing the image of the crucified Christ, decorated with fava beans and wheat stalks as a good omen for the agricultural season.
The festivities are preceded by days of spiritual preparation. During the octave, the crunedda is recited—a Rosary chaplet accompanied by songs and prayers in the Sicilian dialect, which preserves and passes down the village's language and popular piety.
The festival is also linked to the conviviality typical of Sicilian celebrations, with the traditional tasting of frittedda prepared in large quadare (cauldrons) and shared with attendees, in a community spirit that blends devotion with hospitality.
On May 1st, 2026, Isnello renewed its devotion to the Most Holy Crucifix. The day opened at dawn with the tour of the historic Francesco Bajardi Musical Band through the streets of the Madonie village, followed by the Solemn Mass with the participation of the confraternity members.
In the afternoon, the frottole were sung—19th-century sacred hymns from the Sicilian Region's Register of Intangible Heritage—performed by local choirs and musical ensembles. This was followed by the solemn procession of the Crucifix of Santa Maria Maggiore, carried barefoot on the shoulders of the Assunta confraternity members, and the varicedda adorned with fava beans and wheat stalks.
Isnello can be reached by car via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway, taking the Buonfornello exit and continuing toward the Madonie; the nearest train station is Cefalù-Madonie, on the Palermo-Messina line.
The festival takes place every year on May 1st, with celebrations and preparation moments in the preceding days.
We recommend attending the afternoon procession and the performance of the frottole. Access to religious events is free of charge.
