January 23rd in Frigento: between solemn Mass and blessed sugared almonds
On January 23rd, when the Irpinian plateau is in the heart of winter, the village of Frigento โ a municipality in the Province of Avellino, in Campania โ gathers at the Church of San Pietro for the Feast of the Marriage of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. This is not a food festival or a patronal feast with lights and stalls: it is a quiet, devotional celebration that belongs to the religious memory of the town, bringing families, engaged couples, and spouses to the church every year.
The January 23rd observance commemorates, according to ancient tradition, the wedding of the Virgin Mary to the patriarch Saint Joseph. The feast began to spread across Europe in the 15th century and was later adopted into the calendars of various religious orders โ Franciscans, Servites, Dominicans โ and promoted by several popes. In many towns in Southern Italy, the date remains a deeply felt appointment, as it unites the liturgical dimension with the family one: the Marriage is the feast of spouses, engaged couples, and those preparing for marriage.
The most characteristic sign of the day comes at the end of Holy Mass, when blessed white sugared almonds are distributed to those present, enclosed in small tulle bags. Tradition dictates that there should be seven almonds, one for each of the seven Wednesdays preceding the Solemnity of Saint Joseph on March 19th: a small devotional calendar that accompanies the faithful until spring. The gesture intentionally recalls the wedding favors that newlyweds offer to guests at the end of a wedding, making it a sign of good wishes for the couples and families of the town.
The celebration takes place in the Church of San Pietro, mentioned in some 16th-century documents as "San Pietro ab Arco" and of medieval origin, as confirmed by excavations conducted during the restorations following the 1980 earthquake. Between 1794 and 1830, the building underwent several structural changes, recorded by an inscription on the portal's architrave; its current appearance dates back to the early 20th-century reconstruction, with the choir loft supported by local stone columns and a redesigned facade. The bell tower, damaged by the 1962 earthquake, was later demolished. Inside, the wooden choir and pulpit commissioned by the Archconfraternity of the Most Holy Rosary are preserved, decorated with floral motifs, wooden statues attributed to the Neapolitan school of Giuseppe Picano, and paintings referred to the 18th-century workshop of Francesco De Mura.
Frigento stands at an altitude of approximately 911 meters and has just over 3,400 inhabitants. After joining the association in 2019, the town was recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy in November 2023. A walk along Via Limiti offers one of the widest panoramas in the Southern Apennines: on clear days, the view spans areas of five different regions, from Vesuvius to the Maiella, passing through the Matese and the Vulture. The historic center features a dozen 18th-century palaces, including Palazzo De Leo, now the House of Culture and home to the FriMact, a museum that combines an archaeological section with one of the most important contemporary art collections in Southern Italy. At the foot of the village lies the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio, the heart of Frigento's Marian devotion.
The Marriage feast effectively opens the town's devotional year, which continues throughout the following months:
The Marriage feast requires no tickets or reservations: it is a village festival in the most authentic sense of the term, with the community lingering on the church square to exchange greetings. For visitors, it is a rare opportunity to see inland Irpinia outside the tourist season. At nearly a thousand meters in altitude, however, the cold in January is biting: appropriate clothing is highly recommended.
On Friday, January 23rd, 2026, the Church of San Pietro in Frigento hosted the Feast of the Marriage of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph, a fixed appointment in the devotional calendar of the Upper Irpinia village. The celebration is documented by video footage filmed in the church that day, showing the assembly gathered for the liturgy and the final moment of the distribution of blessed sugared almonds.
The rite followed the form handed down for generations: Holy Mass dedicated to the wedding of the Virgin to the patriarch Saint Joseph and, at the end, the delivery to those present of tulle bags with white sugared almonds, to be consumed over the seven Wednesdays that prepare for the solemnity of March 19th. No detailed schedule was released publicly: as with most parish celebrations in Frigento, times were communicated directly in the town in the preceding days.
The festival is part of the busy calendar of events of the Municipality of Frigento, which continues with the Bonfire of Saint Joseph on March 18th, the Marian celebrations in May at the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio, and, in summer, the Tirata dei Carri dei Covoni on August 15th.

Frigento is located at over 900 meters in altitude: in January, warm clothing and comfortable shoes are needed for the sloping streets of the historic center. It is worth arriving a few hours early for the panoramic walk on Via Limiti and a stop at the FriMact in Palazzo De Leo.
