Candlemas in Salignano, in the Capo di Leuca
Every year on February 2nd, the small village of Salignano, in the municipality of Castrignano del Capo (Province of Lecce, Puglia), gathers around the Madonna della Purificazione for one of the most deeply rooted winter festivals in Salento. The event coincides with Candlemas, the feast of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple and the Purification of Mary, which in folk tradition marks the return of light after the heart of winter.
Salignano is just half a kilometer from the municipal center, a stone's throw from Santa Maria di Leuca and the extreme tip of Italy's heel. In the Middle Ages, it was a significant center, as evidenced by the Torre di Salignano, built in 1550 from local stone to defend against pirate raids, and the 17th-century Church of the Purification, which houses a fine painting depicting the Purification. The village's Mother Church is dedicated to Saint Andrew the Apostle. It is in this setting of white stone and ancient alleys that the festival comes to life.
Preparation begins on January 24th with a novena celebrated in the Church of the Confraternity of the Purification. On February 1st, the eve of the feast, the blessing of the candles takes place, followed by a solemn procession that accompanies the statue of the Madonna to the Mother Church, where the pre-festival mass is celebrated. On the day of the feast, February 2nd, the community gathers for a solemn mass and a procession with the candles blessed the day before: this is the symbolic heart of Candlemas, the light that illuminates the path and protects the community.
Beyond the liturgical calendar, the Salignano festival is an identity-defining event that brings generations together. The candlelit procession, the participation of the Confraternity, and the bond with the Mother Church speak to a folk religiosity typical of the Capo di Leuca, where the February cold does not dampen the desire to be together. For those visiting Salento out of season, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic and intimate side of this land, far from the summer crowds.
In 2026, the village of Salignano, in Castrignano del Capo (Lecce), once again renewed its appointment with Candlemas. The festival came to life on the eve of February 1st, when the blessing of the candles preceded the procession of the Madonna's statue to the Mother Church and the pre-festival mass.
On February 2nd, the day of the Madonna della Purificazione, the solemn mass and the procession with the blessed candles followed, marking the most anticipated and evocative moment of the day. The participation of the Confraternity of the Purification reaffirmed the strong bond between the community and its religious roots in the winter heart of the Capo di Leuca.
The festival is preceded by the novena, which began on January 24th in the Church of the Confraternity of the Purification.
The festival takes place in Salignano, a village of Castrignano del Capo (LE), between the Church of the Confraternity of the Purification and the Mother Church.
By car: Salignano can be reached via the SS275 towards Santa Maria di Leuca, exiting towards Castrignano del Capo. The nearest train station is Gagliano-Leuca (Ferrovie del Sud Est), connected to Lecce.
Fixed date: February 2nd (Candlemas), with the eve on February 1st and a novena starting on January 24th.
Participation in the celebrations and processions is free and open to everyone.
