The patronal festival of the medieval village in the Nebrodi mountains
The Feast of the Madonna della Provvidenza is the primary religious celebration in Montalbano Elicona, a charming medieval village perched over 900 meters high in the Nebrodi mountains, in the province of Messina, and recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy. Every year, on August 24th, the entire town gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together faith, popular tradition, and ancient rituals passed down through generations.
The cult of the Madonna della Provvidenza dates back to 1675, when—according to tradition—the Virgin protected Montalbano from a severe drought that threatened the harvests. In gratitude, the community chose the Madonna as their protector, sparking a devotion that has continued uninterrupted for over three centuries. It is considered one of the oldest celebrations in the Nebrodi area.
The heart of the festival is the venerated image of the Madonna and Child, a wooden sculpture from the first half of the 18th century, attributed to the sculptor Alessandro Pantano and adorned with jewels and ex-votos donated by the faithful over the centuries. The statue is kept in the Church of San Domenico, which was elevated to a sanctuary in 1983.
The most anticipated moment is the solemn procession that traverses the narrow streets of the historic center. The "beautiful Image" is carried on the shoulders of the smanicati—devotees in shirtsleeves who have held the privilege of supporting the float for generations—accompanied by the clergy, confraternities, and civil authorities. The day begins with mortar fire and continues with solemn masses dedicated to the numerous pilgrims arriving from neighboring towns.
The festival retains a soul that is both sacred and popular: the village streets fill with stalls, street vendors, and markets, while the marching band accompanies the highlights of the day. As evening falls, the town lights up with multicolored lights, and the celebration concludes with traditional fireworks that frame the skyline of the castle and the medieval village.
Attending the festival is also the perfect chance to visit one of Sicily's most fascinating villages: the majestic Aragonese-Swabian Castle, the stone alleys of the historic center, and the nearby Argimusco megalithic site. The Feast of the Madonna della Provvidenza thus represents an authentic experience of faith, community, and Sicilian tradition in the heart of the Nebrodi.
The 2026 Feast of the Madonna della Provvidenza is scheduled for August 24th in Montalbano Elicona, in the heart of the Nebrodi. As every year, the day will feature opening mortar fire, solemn masses for pilgrims, the solemn procession of the patron saint's wooden statue carried on the shoulders of the 'smanicati' through the streets of the historic center, and, to conclude, the illumination of the village with traditional fireworks.
The complete program with times for individual events has not yet been published; it will be released by the organizers closer to the festival. We recommend checking for updates from the Municipality of Montalbano Elicona and the local parish.
The festival is celebrated every year on August 24th in Montalbano Elicona (ME), Sicily.
By car: from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, take the Falcone-Montalbano exit, then follow the SP road to Montalbano Elicona (about 25 km of mountain road). By train: Falcone station on the Tyrrhenian line, then continue by bus or car. Nearest airports: Catania-Fontanarossa and Reggio Calabria.
Admission to the celebrations is free. We recommend arriving early for the afternoon procession and taking advantage of the day to visit the Castle and the medieval historic center. The village is located at an altitude of over 900 meters: temperatures can be cool in the evening.
