The co-patron saint festival in the Nebrodi village, the last Sunday of August

The Feast of Saint Domenica Virgin and Martyr takes place every year on the last Sunday of August in Santa Domenica Vittoria, one of the highest municipalities in Sicily, nestled at approximately 1,080 meters above sea level in the Nebrodi Mountains, within the Metropolitan City of Messina. From this natural balcony overlooking the northern valley of Mount Etna, the village of just over eight hundred inhabitants gathers around its co-patron in one of the most cherished events of the local calendar.
The devotion to Saint Domenica is at the very origin of the village's name. Popular tradition tells of two lost oxen that led a young shepherd to a cave, where a young woman dressed in white appeared, introducing herself as Saint Domenica, sent from heaven to protect the inhabitants. From that episode, the cry «Viva Santa Domenica» was born, which still accompanies the festival today and gave the village its name. The Saint, a virgin and martyr of the Roman persecutions under Diocletian, is venerated as co-patron alongside the patron saint, Saint Anthony the Abbot, celebrated the following Sunday.
The festival follows an ancient and well-established ritual, marked by religious and popular moments that involve the entire community:
The Feast of Saint Domenica effectively opens the cycle of late-summer celebrations in the village: in 2025, the municipality's celebrations spanned from August 28th to September 8th, encompassing both the co-patron Saint Domenica and the patron saint, Saint Anthony the Abbot, celebrated on the first Sunday of September. It is a period when the Nebrodi village comes back to life, welcoming emigrants returning for the occasion and visitors attracted by the authentic atmosphere of a mountain festival.
Participating in the Feast of Saint Domenica means discovering a little-known corner of inland Sicily, where religious traditions blend with village conviviality. Between processions, fireworks, and games in the square, the festival is also an opportunity to savor the cuisine and typical products of the Nebrodi and to enjoy the cool high-altitude climate, just a few kilometers from Randazzo and the northern slope of Mount Etna.
At the moment, the Municipality of Santa Domenica Vittoria has not yet released the official program for the 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Domenica Virgin and Martyr. The event is traditionally set for the last Sunday of August and is part of the village's summer festival cycle, which concludes with the feast of the patron saint, Saint Anthony the Abbot, in the first days of September.
Detailed information (exact date, times of the mass and procession, side events, and fireworks display) will be communicated by the Municipality and the festival committee in the weeks leading up to the event, generally through the official social media channels of the Municipality.
Santa Domenica Vittoria can be reached by car by driving up from the towns at the foot of Mount Etna: it is about 7 km north of Randazzo (CT). The reference airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and, further away, Palermo. The village is located in a mountainous position in the Nebrodi Mountains.
The last Sunday of August; the village celebrations continue until early September with the feast of the patron saint, Saint Anthony the Abbot.
Being located at over 1,000 meters above sea level, evenings can be cool even in summer: a warmer layer is recommended to attend the evening procession and the fireworks display.
