The patronal feast of Roccella Valdemone, blending centuries-old faith with Ferragosto traditions
In Roccella Valdemone, a small village of about 700 residents perched at 812 meters above sea level in the Nebrodi Park, the Feast of Maria SS. dell'Udienza represents the community's most deeply felt religious and identity-defining event. The celebration, which revolves around Ferragosto and the Assumption of Mary, draws back emigrants to their native village each year, alongside visitors captivated by the charm of an ancient rite, preserved with unwavering devotion by the local population.
At the heart of the festival is the marble statue of the Madonna dell'Udienza, depicting the Virgin and Child. This early 16th-century masterpiece is attributed to the great Palermitan sculptor Antonello Gagini and dates back to around 1540. Weighing approximately seven hundred kilograms, the work is normally housed in the Church of Santa Maria dell'Udienza, formerly the chapel of the baronial castle that overlooks the village. Its artistic quality ranks it among the most precious treasures of sacred heritage in inland Sicily.
Festivities traditionally take place on August 14, 15, and 16. On the morning of the 14th, the statue is moved from the Church of Santa Maria dell'Udienza to the Cathedral of San Nicola di Bari, the village's mother church. On August 15, in the late afternoon, the solemn procession begins: the heavy marble statue is carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the prayers of the faithful. On August 16, the statue returns to its home church.
The most intense and characteristic moment occurs in Piazza Duomo: here the procession stops, and it is in this instant that the Madonna "grants an audience to her children." Parents present their newborns and young children to the Virgin, asking for her consecration and protection; the children are invited to kiss the statue, while newborns are brought close to the face of the effigy. It is from this gesture of maternal welcome that the Madonna takes the name "dell'Udienza" (of the Audience).
The Feast of Maria SS. dell'Udienza is inscribed in the Sicilian Intangible Heritage Register (REIS), a recognition that attests to its anthropological and identity value for the entire Sicilian Region. Along with Saint Nicholas, the Madonna dell'Udienza is the patron saint of Roccella Valdemone. Around these liturgical days, the Municipality and local associations organize cultural and recreational events that bring the village's streets and squares to life.
The 2026 Feast of Maria SS. dell'Udienza in Roccella Valdemone (ME) takes place during the Ferragosto period, from August 14 to 16, 2026. The key moments of the tradition are confirmed: the transfer of the precious 16th-century statue from the Church of Santa Maria dell'Udienza to the Cathedral of San Nicola di Bari on August 14, the solemn procession through the streets of the historic center on the afternoon of August 15 with the evocative "audience" of the Madonna with children in Piazza Duomo, and the return of the statue on August 16.
The detailed program of liturgical celebrations, schedules, and side events (cultural moments, music, entertainment) will be announced by the organizers closer to the event. We recommend checking for updates with the Municipality of Roccella Valdemone and the local parish.
Roccella Valdemone can be reached by car from the SS114 Ionian road (exit Giardini Naxos / Fiumefreddo) heading inland towards the Nebrodi, or from the A18 Messina-Catania motorway. The village is about 50 km from Messina and is located within the Alcantara River Park territory.
Festivities are concentrated on August 14, 15, and 16, with the solemn procession taking place on Ferragosto, August 15.
As this is a small mountain village, we recommend booking accommodation in nearby towns along the Ionian coast or within the Nebrodi area. Mid-summer evenings at this altitude can be cool: bring a light jacket.
