The patronal feast of Diso, in the heart of lower Salento
In lower Salento, a few kilometers from Otranto and the Adriatic coast, the small town of Diso, in the province of Lecce, celebrates its patron saints every year with an event that has made the village famous far beyond regional borders. The Feast of the Holy Apostles Philip and James is so deeply felt and impressive that the organizers themselves have dubbed it "the smallest town with the biggest feast": a village of about a thousand inhabitants that, for a few days, attracts thousands of visitors from all over Salento and Italy.
The Diso community venerates its patrons with deep affection, familiarly calling them "li santi nosci", or "our saints." The feast has roots in a tradition over a century old, where religious and civil aspects merge into one great popular celebration. The most solemn moment is the procession on May 1st, when the statues of the two apostles pass through the main streets of the historic center in an atmosphere of quiet devotion, accompanied by the release of hot-air balloons and brass band concerts.
The civil program is extremely rich. The absolute protagonists are the monumental illuminations, true architectural structures of light that turn the village streets into a glowing stage; their musical lighting on the eve of the feast officially kicks off the celebrations. Alongside these are the grand brass band concerts, featuring prestigious ensembles from other parts of Puglia, and evening musical shows in the historic center.
The most spectacular moment, however, is the daytime fireworks competition on May 1st: a contest between renowned Italian firms in the sector that challenge each other with fireworks in broad daylight, a tradition typical of patronal feasts in Southern Italy. The day begins at dawn with the characteristic "Sweet Awakening," a pyrotechnic blast that announces the start of the feast day to the town.
The Feast of Diso represents the culture of Salento's patronal festivals at its best, where the most authentic Puglia expresses itself through lights, music, pyrotechnics, and devotion. Walking among the illuminations, listening to brass bands under the bandstand, and watching the fireworks competition is an experience that tells the soul of this corner of the province of Lecce, where the community pride of a small village becomes one of the biggest and most anticipated festivals in lower Salento.
The 2026 edition confirmed Diso as one of the symbolic villages of Salento's patronal festivals. The celebrations opened on April 30, the eve of the feast, with the musical lighting of the monumental illuminations in the historic center. May 1st, the main day, saw the pyrotechnic "Sweet Awakening" at dawn, the procession of the patrons through the village streets at 9:00 AM with the release of hot-air balloons, and the solemn Eucharistic celebration at noon. The festival continued on May 2 and 3 with musical shows and entertainment.
The event, organized by the Saints Apostles Feast Committee with the Municipality of Diso and the patronage of the Province of Lecce, was presented in a press conference at Palazzo Adorno.
During the feast: brass band concerts with ensembles from Conversano and Castellana Grotte, evening musical shows, and stands in the historic center.
Diso is located in lower Salento, in the province of Lecce, about 46 km from the regional capital. By car, it can be reached via the SS 275 or the provincial roads connecting Otranto, Castro, and Santa Cesarea Terme. The nearest train station is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est; the reference airports are Brindisi and, further away, Bari.
The feast takes place between the end of April and the first days of May, with the highlight on May 1st (procession, fireworks competition, and Eucharistic celebration).
The event takes place in the streets and squares of the historic center and is free and open to all. It is recommended to arrive early during peak moments to find a spot along the procession route and in the concert area.
