Three days of devotion, music, and fireworks in the heart of the Ciociaria capital
In southern Lazio, where the Ciociaria region paints a landscape of hills, villages, and river valleys, Frosinone celebrates its two patron saints every June: Saint Silverio and Saint Ormisda. This is a nearly unique case in the Italian hagiographic landscape: father and son, both of whom ascended to the papal throne in the 6th century. Ormisda, a native of the Frosinone area, was Pope from 514 to 523; his son Silverio succeeded him in 536, only to be deposed and exiled, eventually dying on the island of Ponza. Over the centuries, the community has built a devotion around these two figures that remains the heart of the city's identity.
The most solemn moment is the Holy Mass in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, celebrated by the Bishop in the presence of civil authorities, confraternities, and local associations. At the end of the service, the procession takes place: the statues of the two patron saints are carried through the streets accompanied by the historic "Romagnoli" City Band, winding through the historic center and traversing the streets that connect the upper part of the city to the valley floor.
The route touches the city's symbolic landmarks: Piazza Santa Maria, Via Plebiscito, Piazzale Vittorio Veneto, Corso della Repubblica, Piazza Norberto Turriziani, and Via Fratelli Bragaglia, before returning to the starting point. Decorated balconies, festive lights, and the slow passage of the pageant offer a glimpse of Frosinone rarely seen in the daily life of a provincial capital.
Alongside the religious dimension, the municipal administration organizes a program of free outdoor performances every year, spread over several evenings. Piazza Norberto Turriziani and Piazzale Vittorio Veneto become open-air stages: musical variety shows, dance nights with nationally renowned DJs, orchestral concerts, and comedy acts have enlivened recent editions, featuring names well-known to television and radio audiences.
The finale is traditionally entrusted to the fireworks display, awaited by thousands of people who gather along the natural terraces of the historic center and the panoramic squares: the city's layout, spread across a ridge overlooking the Sacco Valley, offers privileged viewing points for the fireworks.
Among the installations accompanying the festivities, the Tower of Peace of the Patron Saints stands out, displayed in Piazzale Vittorio Veneto for the entire duration of the event. It is a symbolic installation that unites religious and civil messages, conceived as a sign of cohesion for the entire Frosinone community.
For the Province of Frosinone and the entire southern Lazio region, the feast of the patron saints represents much more than a date on the liturgical calendar. It is the moment when the capital recognizes itself in its own history, fills the squares, and welcomes visitors from neighboring towns. Those arriving during these days will find a city in celebration, with shops open late, food stalls, and an atmosphere that blends quiet reflection with popular joy.
The festivities in honor of the patron saints took place from June 18th to 20th, 2026, culminating on Saturday the 20th. The program, promoted by the Municipality of Frosinone with the departments of the Historic Center and Culture, alternated liturgical moments and entertainment events, all with free admission.
At 6:00 PM on Saturday, in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, Holy Mass was celebrated by H.E. Bishop Santo Marcianò. This was followed by the procession, accompanied by the "Romagnoli" City Band, along Piazza Santa Maria, Via Plebiscito, Piazzale Vittorio Veneto, Corso della Repubblica, Piazza Norberto Turriziani, and Via Fratelli Bragaglia.
Regarding the performances, Thursday the 18th featured the musical variety show of Antonio Delle Donne and his band, Friday the 19th a dance night with DJ Giorgio Prezioso, and Saturday the 20th the concert of Maestro Paolo Belli with his orchestra, followed by fireworks. Throughout the event, the Tower of Peace of the Patron Saints was displayed in Piazzale Vittorio Veneto.
By car: A1 Milan-Naples motorway, Frosinone exit, then the expressway towards the center. By train: Frosinone station on the Rome-Cassino-Naples line, connected to the historic center by city buses. From Rome, Frosinone can be reached in about an hour by car.
The historic center is located on high ground relative to the Scalo area: during the festival days, traffic changes and parking bans are in effect along the procession route. It is advisable to leave your car in the parking lots of the lower city and use the escalator or public transport.
Religious celebrations, the procession, performances in the square, and fireworks are free and open to the public.
For the fireworks display, it is advisable to arrive well in advance at the panoramic viewpoints. In June, Ciociaria evenings can be cool: a light jacket is useful.
