What is Pantasema

Pantasema is the event that has closed the summer calendar of Veroli, an Ernica village in the province of Frosinone, for nearly sixty years. It is a popular and lighthearted festival whose absolute protagonist is the Fantoccio: a large papier-mâché puppet with an iron frame, generous proportions, and an unmistakable smile, handcrafted every year by the organizing committee's volunteers. In the late afternoon, the Fantoccio leads a colorful parade through the alleys and squares of the historic center, accompanied by masks, confetti, and the driving rhythm of street bands; in the evening, it is set ablaze amidst songs, dances, and applause, in a bonfire that represents the fire burning away summer to open the doors to autumn.

An ancient ritual with pagan roots

Behind the joy of the festival lies a tradition with deep roots. The pantasema is a female figure linked to ancient agricultural rites in central Italy, historically widespread across Lazio, Abruzzo, and Marche as a symbol of fertility and the cycles of the seasons. In Veroli, the event has long taken on a more playful and communal character: the burning of the puppet marks the transition toward autumn, the return to routine after the holidays, and, as the locals love to say, the local way of looking at new beginnings with the right spirit of sharing and fun.

How the festival unfolds

The heart of the event is the first Sunday of September. The typical program includes:

• Fantoccio Parade from 5:00 PM: the lighthearted procession winds through the historic center accompanied by masks, floats, confetti, and street bands;
• Burning of the Pantasema in Piazza Santa Salome: the most anticipated moment, when the puppet is set on fire amidst music, songs, and dances;
• Evening party: in recent editions, the evening has continued with the Panta Crazy Disco Party at the Terrazza del Vescovado, featuring DJ sets until late at night.

In some years, the festival has kicked off on Saturday with the "Notte della Pantàsema," featuring games, special museum openings, and live music in the village.

Recent editions

The 58th edition took place on Sunday, September 8, 2024, while the 59th edition animated the historic center on Sunday, September 14, 2025, always with free admission. Pantasema is included in the official Veroli Estate program for 2026 as well, confirming a tradition that never pauses and is now part of the city's most authentic narrative.

The festival is also an opportunity to discover Veroli, one of the most fascinating art cities in Ciociaria, in southern Lazio. The village, of Ernica origins, preserves a historic center rich in Romanesque churches, medieval alleys, and panoramic views over the Sacco Valley, as well as the famous Casamari Abbey just a few kilometers away. The Municipality of Veroli, together with local associations, supports the event as part of a rich summer calendar that combines culture, sports, and traditions of the Frosinone province and the Lazio Region across the historic center and surrounding districts.
