The patronal feast of Cursi, in the heart of the Lecce stone region

The Feast of Saint Nicholas the Bishop is the main patronal festival of Cursi, a small town in the province of Lecce nestled in the heart of Salento, Puglia. Every year, traditionally in the last ten days of May, the community gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together religious devotion and popular festivities, featuring solemn rites, illuminations, brass bands, and fireworks.
Cursi is known as the "village of Lecce stone": its territory, less suited to agriculture, became famous for the open-air quarries from which the characteristic golden stone used throughout Salento for churches, palaces, and baroque portals is extracted. At the center of the village stands the Mother Church of Saint Nicholas the Bishop, a neoclassical building with a Latin cross plan and a single nave: the first stone was laid in 1830, and the construction, which incorporated parts of the ancient place of worship, was completed around 1838.
The festivities in honor of Saint Nicholas open with the triduum and several Eucharistic celebrations in the days leading up to the anniversary. On the day of the feast, the community participates in the Solemn Holy Mass celebrated in the Mother Church, decorated for the occasion with floral arrangements. The most anticipated moment is the procession, during which the statue of the saint is carried on the shoulders of the faithful through the streets of the town, lit up by festive illuminations.
Alongside the religious rites, the festival offers a rich civil program: itinerant brass bands parade through the streets of the historic center, while band and light music concerts enliven the square from the traditional bandstand. The evening concludes with fireworks, which light up the sky of Cursi and attract visitors from neighboring towns.
The devotion of the people of Cursi to Saint Nicholas is intertwined with that for the Madonna dell'Abbondanza, venerated in the sanctuary of the same name at the gates of the town. During the festivities, processions also take place, accompanying the statue of the Madonna from the Mother Church to her sanctuary, in a dialogue between the two cults that returns later, in a broader form, during the summer festival in July.
Organized by the parish with the support of the Municipality of Cursi, the Feast of Saint Nicholas the Bishop represents one of the most heartfelt moments of the year for this village in the Salento region: an opportunity to rediscover popular traditions, faith, and the hospitality of a community deeply tied to its history and its stone.
In 2026, the community of Cursi renewed its devotion to Saint Nicholas the Bishop, patron saint of the Salento village in the province of Lecce. The festivities followed tradition, with religious rites in the Mother Church, the procession of the statue through the historic center, and civil events featuring brass bands and fireworks. Precise dates and a detailed program were not published in an official municipal calendar; it is recommended to verify information with the parish or the Municipality of Cursi.
