Three days of celebration in the heart of the Iblei mountains, blending devotion, tradition, and the flavors of Canicattini
In Canicattini Bagni, a town in the Iblei mountains in the province of Syracuse, the Feast of Saint John the Baptist is a tradition that continues to gain momentum. Known as the Baptizer, the humble precursor to the Messiah, Saint John enjoys a steadily growing devotion in the city, so much so that many local districts and landmarks still bear his name, commemorating the ancient churches dedicated to him before the 1693 earthquake.
For three evenings in late June, the villageโfamous for its elegant Art Nouveau facades that earned it the nickname 'City of Liberty'โtransforms into an open-air stage. The festival blends religious observance with popular festivities, offering events designed for families, young people, and visitors alike.
The program weaves together various strands of Sicilian popular culture:
Canicattini Bagni is an authentic stop for those wishing to discover southeastern Sicily away from the more crowded tourist circuits. Resting on the Iblei plateau, a short distance from Syracuse, Noto, and the Anapo Valley, the town preserves a remarkably consistent Art Nouveau architectural heritage and a community life still marked by traditional festivals. The Feast of Saint John the Baptist is the ideal opportunity to experience this genuine atmosphere, made of music, popular faith, and conviviality.
The event takes place in the historic center of Canicattini Bagni and is promoted by the Municipality in collaboration with local associations.
