The procession of the Martyrโs wooden statue through the Irpinian village of Montefalcione

In Montefalcione, an Irpinian village perched over five hundred meters above sea level in the province of Avellino, the Feast of Saint Feliciano the Martyr is much more than a liturgical calendar event: it is the moment the entire community reaffirms its history. The Saintโs remains arrived in the village on November 26, 1826, from Rome; they were collected in Naples by members of the Confraternity of the Good Death and reassembled in a convent in Nola before reaching the heart of Campania. The first public celebrations in his honor were held on May 16, 1827, as documented by a period pamphlet, and the devotion has remained unbroken ever since.
The heart of the festival is the procession of the wooden statue of the Martyr, acquired in 1874: the reliquaries containing part of the Saintโs remains are embedded in the simulacrum's belt. The feretory travels through the streets of the historic center amidst throngs of the faithful, accompanied by the clergy, confraternities, and the brass band. Tradition sets this solemn event for the last Sunday of May, coinciding with the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord: the votive festival of Montefalcione has over time become the popular corollary to that major liturgical date. In 1926, during the centenary celebrations of the relics' arrival, devotees reported witnessing the liquefaction of the Martyrโs blood, an episode that further strengthened the bond between the village and its protector.
The relics rest in the Church of Santa Maria del Loreto, which the locals simply call 'o Monastero (the Monastery): it is the former Verginian convent, founded in 1550 by the will of the Poderico family, Marquises of Montefalcione. The late-Baroque building preserves sixteenth-century panels and decorative cycles created in 1930 by the Neapolitan painter Raffaele Iodice, including The Martyrdom of Saint Feliciano and The Triumph of the Saint in Heaven. This is where the festival days begin and end, and where the processional cortege departs.
The schedule spans several days. The religious side includes the triduum of preparation, with the recitation of the rosary, the exposition of the Saint, and evening masses, followed by the solemn Sunday with morning celebrations, a sung mass at midday, and the afternoon service preceding the statue's exit. On the secular side, in past editions, the village has awakened to the morning band parade through the streets, closing in the evening with a concert by the brass band in the square and a fireworks display near the covered market. Illuminations light up the historic center for the duration of the festivities: in Montefalcione, the care for lighting is a recognized specialty, which grew alongside the arrival of electricity in the village in 1927.
With just over three thousand inhabitants, Montefalcione is only fourteen kilometers from Avellino and is one of the liveliest centers in inland Campania for popular festivals. The local calendar opens with the Easter Via Crucis, continues in May with Saint Feliciano, in June with the thirteen-day novena and the feast of Saint Anthony of Padua, patron of the village along with Saint Lucy, and culminates between late August and early September with the great patronal festivities and the famous fireworks competition, which attracts the best companies in Southern Italy to Irpinia.
Those arriving for the procession will find a village worth a stroll: the Lombard-era castle with its circular tower, the thirteenth-century Porta Ripa, and the Sanctuary of Saint Anthony with its imposing bell tower and bronze portal. All around are the vineyards that produce two of Italy's most prestigious wines, Fiano di Avellino DOCG and Taurasi DOCG: a perfect opportunity to combine popular devotion with a stop at a winery.
At the time of writing, neither the dates nor the program for the 2026 edition of the Feast of Saint Feliciano the Martyr in Montefalcione, Avellino province, have been published. However, the votive festival is a fixed appointment in the village's life: tradition places it in late May, coinciding with the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, with the procession of the wooden statue that houses the Martyr's reliquaries in its belt.
The final calendar, with the religious program curated by the parish and the secular one by the Montefalcione Festival Committee, is usually announced via posters displayed in the village, on the Committee's social channels, and in the local Irpinian press. Those wishing to participate can check for updates on the Committee's website and social pages or contact the organizers directly.
The celebrations take place in Montefalcione (ZIP 83030), in the province of Avellino, between the Church of Santa Maria del Loreto on Via Cardinale dell'Olio 7 and the streets of the historic center, which the procession crosses on the afternoon of the solemn Sunday.
