About Saint Bernardino in Filettino

Every year around May 20th, Filettino celebrates its patron saint, Saint Bernardino of Siena, with a festival that blends religious devotion with local village life. In the highest village in the Lazio region, perched at an altitude of 1,063 meters in the heart of the Monti Simbruini Regional Natural Park, the silver bust of the Saint is carried through the narrow streets in a procession accompanied by a brass band. The solemn day continues with traditional games, fireworks, and a classic public barbecue in the square open to everyone.

The patron saint of the highest village in Lazio

At an altitude of 1,063 meters, in the province of Frosinone on the eastern edge of Lazio, Filettino is the highest municipality in the region: a stone-built village overlooking the upper Aniene Valley, nestled in the Monti Simbruini Regional Natural Park. Every year around May 20th, the Feast in honor of Saint Bernardino of Siena, the town's patron saint, is renewed. This is not an event staged for tourists, but the community's identity-defining festival, a time when former residents return home and families reunite.

A patronage born from a miracle

Local devotion to Saint Bernardino is rooted in an event that tradition dates back to 1486: the Sienese friar, while visiting the town besieged by the Orsini troops, reportedly knelt in prayer on a rock just outside the village, leaving the imprint of his knee and foot. The sky darkened and a violent hailstorm struck only the besiegers' camp, forcing them to flee. The site of that prayer is still a place of pilgrimage today, known as the Cona di San Bernardino. From 1528, the Sienese Saint was joined with the ancient patron, Saint Sebastian, eventually becoming the primary reference for the town's devotional calendar.

The relics and the parish

The heart of the celebrations is the Parish of Santa Maria Assunta, where the chapel dedicated to Saint Bernardino houses the precious silver bust of the Saint, an ex corpore relic, and a fragment of his final habit. It is this bust that, on the evening of May 19th, is carried in procession through the historic center, accompanied by civil and religious authorities, candle-bearing faithful, and the Filettino Musical Band, one of the village's most deeply rooted social institutions.

How the festival unfolds

The festivities are spread over several days, with the main events concentrated between May 19th and 20th. The traditional sequence includes:

  • the torchlight pilgrimage on the eve of the religious anniversary;
  • the solemn procession with the silver bust and the Saint's relic on the evening of the 19th;
  • the Solemn Mass on May 20th at the parish church, attended by civil and military authorities and representatives of the Province of Frosinone;
  • traditional games in the squares and streets of the village, a highlight for children and families;
  • the public barbecue in the square, offered to all attendees, closing the day on a convivial note;
  • the evening fireworks display set against the mountain skyline.

What to see beyond the festival

Those who travel to Filettino for the patronal festival will find a village well worth exploring: the medieval alleys, the Permanent Art & Crafts Exhibition showcasing Filettino's traditions — historical costumes, band instruments, and equipment related to the Campo Staffi ski resort — and the trails of the Monti Simbruini Park, which are in full bloom in May. The springs of the Aniene river and the high-altitude beech forests make the town an ideal base for hiking, in an area that thrives on skiing and snowshoeing during the winter.

A community celebration

Organized by the Municipality of Filettino in collaboration with the parish and local associations, the festivities maintain the spirit of a true village feast: access to events is free and participation is spontaneous. For those arriving from Rome or the Ciociaria area, it is a chance to discover an intact tradition of the mountainous Lazio, where religious and social dimensions remain perfectly intertwined.

The 2026 edition of Filettino's patronal festivities spanned nine days, from Saturday, May 16th, to Sunday, May 24th, with the traditional core celebrations on May 19th and 20th. A nine-day edition

The 2026 Feast in honor of Saint Bernardino of Siena took place in Filettino (province of Frosinone, Lazio) from Saturday, May 16th to Sunday, May 24th, organized by the Municipality. The multi-day schedule allowed for a balance between liturgical and civil events, with the calendar focusing on the patron saint's day, set as always on May 20th.

The two solemn days

On the evening of Tuesday, May 19th, the solemn procession took place: the silver bust of the Saint and the ex corpore relic, kept in the chapel of the Parish of Santa Maria Assunta, were carried through the village streets accompanied by the musical band and the faithful. On Wednesday, May 20th, the day of the feast, the morning was dedicated to the Solemn Mass at the parish church in the presence of the authorities.

The popular side

Throughout the rest of the day on the 20th, the village experienced its most convivial side, with traditional games in the squares, an evening fireworks display, and the traditional public barbecue offered to the entire population and visitors. All events were free to attend.
