About Feast of Saint Anthony

Every year around June 13th, Cianciana gathers to honor its patron saint, Saint Anthony of Padua, who has been venerated here since the town's founding in 1646. Three days of devotion and popular festivities bring the historic center of this small Sicani Mountains town, in the province of Agrigento, to life: solemn masses, vespers with the kissing of the relic, the procession of the statue through the streets, the blessing of the bread, dawn salutes, marching bands, and spectacular fireworks to close the event. An authentic patronal feast that unites the sacred and the secular in the heart of Sicily.

The patronal feast of Cianciana

The Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua is the most cherished event of the year for the community of Cianciana, a small town in the province of Agrigento nestled in the middle Platani river valley, at the foot of the Sicani Mountains. Saint Anthony has been the town's patron since its inception: the village was founded on October 4, 1646, under the name Sant'Antonino di Cianciana, by the feudal Joppolo family, who were devoted to the Saint of Padua. For nearly four centuries, every June 13th, the entire citizenry has gathered to honor their protector.

Devotion and historical roots

The heart of this devotion is the parish church, which houses the wooden statue of Saint Anthony, a work attributed to the sculptor Filippo Quattrocchi. In the days leading up to the solemnity, the tredicina (thirteen-day prayer) and the rosary in honor of the Saint take place, culminating in solemn vespers attended by local authorities and the kissing of the relic. On the morning of the feast, the town awakens to the alborata (dawn salute), greeted by firecrackers and the beating of drums, while the historic Giuseppe Verdi marching band parades through the streets collecting offerings from the faithful.

The procession and the blessing of the bread

The most anticipated moment is the procession of the statue: Saint Anthony's statue is carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center amidst songs, prayers, and the affection of the entire community, continuing late into the evening. The traditional blessing of the bread, distributed to devotees according to a deep-rooted Antonian custom, is a highlight. To close the day, a fireworks display illuminates the sky over the Sicani Mountains.

The secular program

Alongside the religious celebrations, the municipal administration organizes a rich program of side events every year: musical evenings in the square and along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, performances, tastings of local products at the convent kiosk, and live bands at the picturesque Clock Staircase (Scalinata dell'Orologio). In recent years, the festival has also been enriched by the Cianciana Produce expo, a showcase for local agri-food chains, craftsmanship, and the identity of the territory.

An event in the heart of Sicily

The Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua is the perfect opportunity to discover Cianciana and the Sicani Mountains: a village with a mining history (the rich sulfur mines that marked its development) now also known for the restoration of its historic center. Between popular faith, music, and Sicilian flavors, the patronal feast remains an authentic mirror of the soul of inland Sicily.
