The festival that kicks off summer in the heart of lower Salento
In the small town of Morciano di Leuca, home to just over three thousand residents overlooking the sea of lower Salento in the province of Lecce, the Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua is much more than a religious anniversary. Celebrated every year on June 13th, the Saint's liturgical day, it symbolically marks the beginning of the summer season: it is the town's first major festival, drawing back emigrants for the summer and welcoming the first tourists heading toward the coastal areas of Torre Vado, Torre Pali, and Pescoluse.
The heart of the day is the procession of the statue of Saint Anthony, carried on shoulders through the town's festively decorated streets. The roads are illuminated by luminarie (traditional light displays) and filled with typical mostaccioli stalls and sweets, while the community accompanies the statue with songs and prayers. At the end of the main mass, according to a deeply felt tradition, the blessed bread of Saint Anthony is distributed on the steps of the Mother Church of San Giovanni Elemosiniere: the faithful receive it and, before eating it, recite the Lord's Prayer. Children who have recently received their First Communion also participate in the celebration.
Alongside the religious moments, the Religious Festival Committee of Morciano di Leucaโa volunteer association founded in 2004 that assists the parish priest in organizing the eventโalso manages the secular program, consisting of concerts in the square, performances, and evening entertainment. In recent years, the festival has hosted events dedicated to Salento's singer-songwriter scene, such as the concert by Mino De Santis, accompanied by the accordion of maestro Pantaleo Colazzo, who together tell the story of life and roots in Salento with irony and poetry.
The Mother Church of San Giovanni Elemosiniere, the town's patron saint, was built in 1576 and retains a Romanesque structure with clear Baroque influences. Nestled among the olive trees of the Capo di Leuca, just a few kilometers from the southern tip of Puglia, the town offers visitors an authentic glimpse of Salento's popular traditions, where faith intertwines with local festivals, gastronomy, and hospitality.
The 2026 Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua in Morciano di Leuca was celebrated on Saturday, June 13th, on the Saint's liturgical day. The day combined religious moments โ holy masses in the Mother Church of San Giovanni Elemosiniere, the solemn procession of the statue through the streets decorated with lights, and the distribution of blessed bread โ with the traditional secular program organized by the Religious Festival Committee.
The highlight of the evening was the concert Una storia da raccontare by Salento singer-songwriter Mino De Santis, accompanied by the accordion of maestro Pantaleo Colazzo: a show of original music in dialect that weaves together irony, memory, and the roots of the territory.
