The medieval re-enactment of Copertino in honor of the Virgin of the Snows
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Madonna della Neve Historical Pageant is one of the most heartfelt historical re-enactments in Salento. Every year in early August, it transforms the historic center of Copertino, in the Province of Lecce, into a fascinating medieval setting. The event, held continuously since 1976, combines religious devotion to the Madonna della Neve with the spectacle of a grand period-costume parade, attracting visitors from all over Puglia.
The festival is rooted in one of the oldest Marian traditions: the miracle of the snow that fell in Rome in the middle of August, which led to the founding of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. In Copertino, the cult is linked to the Basilica Pontificia Sancta Maria ad Nives, the Mother Church dedicated to the Virgin, which is spiritually united with the Roman basilica. According to tradition, it was Manfred of Sicily who consecrated the ancient mother church to the Madonna della Neve, thus starting a devotion that has lasted for centuries.
The heart of the festive activities is the Palio della Madonna della Neve, which sees the city's five historic districts compete: Cittadella, Casole, Mollone, Cigliano, and Cambrò. During the evenings of the festival, the districts compete for the palii through a series of medieval-inspired trials, including the archery tournament (the Golden Arrow), races, and tests of strength in the town squares. The atmosphere is that of a true chivalric contest, complete with drummers, banners, and ancient crafts.
The highlight is the historical pageant that parades from the majestic Angevin Castle along the city streets: over 150 figures in medieval costume, including counts and countesses, ladies and knights, accompanied by flag-wavers, archers, musicians, street performers, and horses. The choreographic component involves re-enactment groups and associations from various towns in Salento, creating a visually striking spectacle that culminates near the liturgical feast day of August 5th.
Alongside the re-enactment, the festival maintains its deep religious character, with the Solemn Mass in the Basilica and moments of devotion dedicated to the patron saint. The Madonna della Neve Historical Pageant is organized by a dedicated committee with the support of the Municipality of Copertino and represents one of the defining events for the local community, capable of combining spirituality, historical memory, and popular celebration in one of the most evocative settings in Salento.
The Madonna della Neve Historical Pageant will return in 2026 to enliven the historic center of Copertino, in the Province of Lecce, with its usual three-day festival format in early August. The precise dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been made public: as every year, the return of the Palio della Madonna della Neve between the districts of Cittadella, Casole, Mollone, Cigliano, and Cambrò, the medieval games, and the grand pageant with over 150 costumed participants departing from the Angevin Castle is expected. For official dates and events, please refer to the channels of the organizing committee and the Municipality of Copertino.
Copertino is located in the Province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento. By car, it can be reached via the SS101 Lecce-Gallipoli road, taking the Copertino exit. By train, the Copertino station is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est on the Lecce-Gallipoli line. The nearest airport is Brindisi-Salento, about 50 km away.
The festival traditionally takes place in the first days of August, with the historical pageant held near August 5th. Events enliven the historic center, the Angevin Castle, and the main town squares.
The events take place outdoors and are free to attend. It is recommended to arrive early to secure a good spot for the pageant and the Palio games.
