About Madonna della Neve Historical Pageant

Every year in early August, Copertino travels back to the Middle Ages to celebrate the Madonna della Neve, the patron saint of the Basilica Pontificia Sancta Maria ad Nives. Three days of festivities bring the historic center of Salento to life: the Palio featuring games between the five districts, the archers' challenge, and the grand pageant parading from the Angevin Castle with over 150 costumed participants, flag-wavers, musicians, and knights. A popular tradition alive since 1976, where religious devotion and historical re-enactment intertwine in the heart of Salento.

A medieval re-enactment in the heart of Salento

The Madonna della Neve Historical Pageant is one of the most heartfelt historical re-enactments in Salento. Every year in early August, it transforms the historic center of Copertino, in the Province of Lecce, into a fascinating medieval setting. The event, held continuously since 1976, combines religious devotion to the Madonna della Neve with the spectacle of a grand period-costume parade, attracting visitors from all over Puglia.

The legend of the miracle of the snow

The festival is rooted in one of the oldest Marian traditions: the miracle of the snow that fell in Rome in the middle of August, which led to the founding of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. In Copertino, the cult is linked to the Basilica Pontificia Sancta Maria ad Nives, the Mother Church dedicated to the Virgin, which is spiritually united with the Roman basilica. According to tradition, it was Manfred of Sicily who consecrated the ancient mother church to the Madonna della Neve, thus starting a devotion that has lasted for centuries.

The Palio and games between the five districts

The heart of the festive activities is the Palio della Madonna della Neve, which sees the city's five historic districts compete: Cittadella, Casole, Mollone, Cigliano, and Cambrò. During the evenings of the festival, the districts compete for the palii through a series of medieval-inspired trials, including the archery tournament (the Golden Arrow), races, and tests of strength in the town squares. The atmosphere is that of a true chivalric contest, complete with drummers, banners, and ancient crafts.

The grand pageant from the Angevin Castle

The highlight is the historical pageant that parades from the majestic Angevin Castle along the city streets: over 150 figures in medieval costume, including counts and countesses, ladies and knights, accompanied by flag-wavers, archers, musicians, street performers, and horses. The choreographic component involves re-enactment groups and associations from various towns in Salento, creating a visually striking spectacle that culminates near the liturgical feast day of August 5th.

Faith, tradition, and community

Alongside the re-enactment, the festival maintains its deep religious character, with the Solemn Mass in the Basilica and moments of devotion dedicated to the patron saint. The Madonna della Neve Historical Pageant is organized by a dedicated committee with the support of the Municipality of Copertino and represents one of the defining events for the local community, capable of combining spirituality, historical memory, and popular celebration in one of the most evocative settings in Salento.

Madonna della Neve Historical Pageant — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Madonna della Neve Historical Pageant is expected in Copertino in early August, as per tradition, with the grand pageant near the liturgical feast of August 5th. At the moment, the official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers: the Palio between the five districts, the medieval games, and the costume parade from the Angevin Castle will be confirmed as soon as the final calendar is released.

The Madonna della Neve Historical Pageant will return in 2026 to enliven the historic center of Copertino, in the Province of Lecce, with its usual three-day festival format in early August. The precise dates and detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been made public: as every year, the return of the Palio della Madonna della Neve between the districts of Cittadella, Casole, Mollone, Cigliano, and Cambrò, the medieval games, and the grand pageant with over 150 costumed participants departing from the Angevin Castle is expected. For official dates and events, please refer to the channels of the organizing committee and the Municipality of Copertino.
