About Saint Anthony Guardiola

Every June 1st, the Guardiola district of Fresagrandinaria, in the province of Chieti, gathers around the small church of Saint Anthony of Padua, built in 1910 inside a grotto on the right bank of the Treste River. The day blends devotion and community: dawn blessings and the distribution of bread rolls, fireworks, Holy Masses, and a solemn procession with the Saint's relic, accompanied by the Gissi band. In the evening, the festivities continue with a musical performance in the square and a closing fireworks display, nestled in a corner of Abruzzo of rare natural beauty.

A feast born from a grotto on the Treste River

The Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua is celebrated every year in Contrada Guardiola, a rural hamlet in the municipality of Fresagrandinaria, a small village of Lombard origin in the province of Chieti, in the heart of southern Abruzzo, just a stone's throw from the Trabocchi Coast and the border with Molise. The heart of the devotion is the small Church of Saint Anthony, built in 1910 inside a natural grotto on the right bank of the Treste River, to honor the apparitions of the Saint who, according to local tradition, appeared as a pilgrim to an elderly local peasant woman between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The church in the rock

The original building was demolished and rebuilt in stone in 1975, with its facade facing the river and connected, as it was originally, to the grotto of the apparitions. Nestled in a natural environment of rare beauty and recognized as an area of naturalistic interest, the small church with its bell gable is the destination of the procession that gathers the inhabitants of the district and devotees from neighboring towns every year.

The day's program

The festival traditionally centers on June 1st and marks the entire day with religious rites and moments of community:

  • 7:45 AM — Blessing and distribution of bread rolls;
  • 8:00 AM — Opening fireworks and Holy Mass at the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, followed by the procession with the Saint's relic toward the church on the banks of the Treste River, accompanied by the Gissi marching band;
  • 11:00 AM — Holy Mass and procession with the band;
  • 5:00 PM — Afternoon Mass;
  • 9:00 PM — Evening musical performance in the square;
  • Closing — Final fireworks display.

Devotion and community

The anniversary is deeply rooted in the life of the district and represents one of the most heartfelt moments of the year for Fresagrandinaria. The Gissi band, the fireworks, and the evening musical show transform a day of prayer into a participatory village festival, capable of attracting emigrants and visitors to the natural vistas of the Treste Valley. In 2024, the celebration was exceptionally postponed to avoid overlapping with the Madonna Grande festivities, before returning to its traditional date of June 1st.
