The patronal feast of the Guardiola district, set between the grotto of the apparitions and the banks of the Treste River
The Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua is celebrated every year in Contrada Guardiola, a rural hamlet in the municipality of Fresagrandinaria, a small village of Lombard origin in the province of Chieti, in the heart of southern Abruzzo, just a stone's throw from the Trabocchi Coast and the border with Molise. The heart of the devotion is the small Church of Saint Anthony, built in 1910 inside a natural grotto on the right bank of the Treste River, to honor the apparitions of the Saint who, according to local tradition, appeared as a pilgrim to an elderly local peasant woman between the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The original building was demolished and rebuilt in stone in 1975, with its facade facing the river and connected, as it was originally, to the grotto of the apparitions. Nestled in a natural environment of rare beauty and recognized as an area of naturalistic interest, the small church with its bell gable is the destination of the procession that gathers the inhabitants of the district and devotees from neighboring towns every year.
The festival traditionally centers on June 1st and marks the entire day with religious rites and moments of community:
The anniversary is deeply rooted in the life of the district and represents one of the most heartfelt moments of the year for Fresagrandinaria. The Gissi band, the fireworks, and the evening musical show transform a day of prayer into a participatory village festival, capable of attracting emigrants and visitors to the natural vistas of the Treste Valley. In 2024, the celebration was exceptionally postponed to avoid overlapping with the Madonna Grande festivities, before returning to its traditional date of June 1st.
The 2026 edition was held on June 1st in Contrada Guardiola, Fresagrandinaria. The day began at 7:45 AM with the blessing and distribution of bread rolls, followed at 8:00 AM by fireworks and Holy Mass at the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, with the procession of the Saint's relic toward the church on the Treste River, accompanied by the Gissi band. At 11:00 AM, a new Mass was celebrated by Father Louis Baskar, followed by a procession, and at 5:00 PM, the afternoon Mass. In the evening, at 9:00 PM, the musical show "Dancing Under the Stars" took place, followed by the closing fireworks.
The festival is held in Contrada Guardiola, in the municipality of Fresagrandinaria (ZIP 66050), province of Chieti, Abruzzo. The Church of Saint Anthony stands in the grotto on the right bank of the Treste River, while the opening Mass is celebrated at the Church of the Madonna delle Grazie in the village.
By car: from San Salvo (A14 motorway exit San Salvo-Vasto Sud), head inland up the Trigno Valley; Fresagrandinaria is just a few kilometers from the border with Molise. The nearest train station is Vasto-San Salvo on the Adriatic line.
Religious and popular festival with free admission.
