About Saint Anne Feast in Dupino

Every year at the end of July, the village of Dupino in Cava de' Tirreni gathers around the church of San Nicola di Bari for the feast of Saint Anne and Saint Joachim. It is a four-day event where popular devotion blends with neighborhood life: rosaries, vespers, solemn masses, the procession with statues carried through the uphill streets, the town band concert, gastronomic evenings, and children's games. An authentic celebration, far from mass tourism, in the heart of the hills of the Salerno province.

A neighborhood festival in the heart of the City of Cava de' Tirreni

At the end of July, when the heat hits the hills surrounding Cava de' Tirreni, the Dupino district prepares for its most heartfelt celebration: the one dedicated to Saint Anne and Saint Joachim, the parents of the Virgin Mary, celebrated by the liturgy on July 26th. This is not a large tourist event; it is a neighborhood festival in the truest sense of the word, organized by the parish community of San Nicola di Bari together with the festival committee and the contribution of local associations. Visitors here will find an unvarnished Campania, made of narrow alleys, families pulling chairs out in front of their homes, and a devotion passed down through generations.

Dupino, a village with a thousand years of history

Dupino is located in the south-eastern part of the Municipality of Cava de' Tirreni, in the province of Salerno, nestled on a green slope just a few kilometers from the city center and the famous arcades of Corso Umberto I. Its origins date back to the Middle Ages: in the 14th century, it was part of the Metelliano district, one of the four historical subdivisions of the Cava territory. Onofrio Scannapieco, mayor in 1460, came from here; his loyalty to the Aragonese crown earned Cava the title of Faithful City and fiscal privileges that marked its history.

The church of San Nicola di Bari

The center of the festival is the church of San Nicola di Bari, one of the oldest sacred buildings in the area. The first documented mention dates back to 1046, when Abbot Alferio granted it to a deacon named Pietro; Pope Alexander III confirmed its jurisdiction to the Badia della Santissima Trinità in 1168. Restored in 1546, it was later rebuilt in 1707-1708 in its current late-mannerist form. Inside, it houses a 16th-century gilded wooden pulpit, a 1587 Crucifixion canvas, and a 1750 marble altar.

The 1980 earthquake left deep wounds, and for safety reasons, the church remained closed to worship for a long time. For years, the Dupino community, supported by the Don Emilio Papa association, has been carrying out fundraising, bingo nights, and neighborhood initiatives to finance the restoration: the lottery drawn during the festival is one of these tools, and it has made the festivities something more than just a simple religious recurrence.

Faith, brass bands, and conviviality

The program spans four days and alternates between liturgical and civil moments. It begins with the Holy Rosary and the Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Archbishop of Amalfi-Cava de' Tirreni, followed by Eucharistic adoration, vespers, and a mass with a blessing dedicated to children, mothers, expectant women, and grandparents: a gesture that directly recalls the patronage of Saint Anne, always invoked as the protector of mothers.

Alongside the religious aspect, the committee organizes games for children in collaboration with the CSI, gastronomic evenings with traditional Cava dishes, ballroom dancing under the stars, and musical performances. It is the type of program that brings three generations together in the same square, without the need for large stages.

The procession, the most awaited moment

The climax arrives on Sunday evening. After the blessing of the bearers, the statues of Saint Anne, Saint Joachim, and Saint Nicholas are carried through the uphill streets of the district, accompanied by the faithful and enriched by the concert of the "Città di Cava de' Tirreni" Brass Band. Facades light up, balconies fill up, and the procession crosses the village with a slowness that is anything but accidental: it is the way Dupino tells its story to itself once a year.

What to expect

  • Atmosphere: intimate and familiar, with high participation from residents, without tourist crowds.
  • Admission: free and open to all events.
  • Gastronomy: stands and convivial evenings with local specialties and homemade desserts.
  • Music: town band, ballroom dancing, and entertainment in the square.
  • For families: games and activities dedicated to children in the early evenings.

Why it's worth it

In a Campania often described only through the Amalfi Coast and Naples, festivals like this restore the truest dimension of the villages in the Salerno hinterland. Cava de' Tirreni is halfway between Salerno and the coast, easily reachable by train, and during the week of Saint Anne, it offers the curious visitor the chance to see a living tradition, not reconstructed for the public. Those who stop even just for the Sunday procession understand why the district continues to fight to reopen its thousand-year-old church.
