The challenge of Sicilian historical pageants amidst the Baroque stones of Noto
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Palio of the Three Valleys of Sicily is one of the most evocative historical re-enactment events in South-Eastern Sicily. It takes place in Noto, the capital of Baroque in the province of Syracuse and a UNESCO World Heritage site, where the famous Corso Vittorio Emanuele transforms into a natural stage for a grand festival of colors, sounds, and period costumes. The event is organized by the Corteo Barocco Association of Noto, an organization that has been preserving and promoting the tradition of the city's historical pageant for years.
The name of the Palio recalls the ancient administrative division of Sicily into three large historical districts: Val Demone (the north-eastern part, including Messina and the Etna area), Val di Mazara (western Sicily, from Palermo to Trapani and Agrigento), and Val di Noto (the South-East, from Syracuse to Ragusa and Catania). By bringing historical pageants from all over the island to Noto, the Palio becomes a true retrospective on the social evolution and customs of Sicily, a journey through time that spans centuries of history.
The heart of the day is the grand parade that crosses the historic center of Noto. Dozens of historical groups from numerous Sicilian towns enliven the streets with flag-wavers, musicians, and performers in period attire crafted by skilled seamstresses. Among the most admired figures is the Grand Ceremonial Master, whose sumptuous costume requires about three months of work: he is the one who recounts the history of Noto and introduces the characters of the pageant. The Flag-wavers and Musicians of the City of Noto, the hosts of the event, are also a highlight.
The parade starts from Piazza Bixio and continues along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, going up via Rocco Pirri to via Cavour, then reaching via Cavarra and arriving at Piazzale Marconi, with the finale in Piazza Municipio. Here, a jury composed of institutions, industry experts, and journalists declares the winning group, which receives the Paliotto, a garnet velvet cloth embellished with the figure of a Noto knight in 18th-century costume.
More than just a competition, the Palio of the Three Valleys is a moment of encounter between the many souls of Sicilian folkloric tradition. For visitors, it represents the perfect opportunity to discover Noto in a festive atmosphere, amidst the timeless charm of Baroque palaces and the energy of drums and flags fluttering in the sky. An event that unites history, folklore, and regional identity in the heart of the Val di Noto.
The 2026 edition of the Palio of the Three Valleys of Sicily in Noto is expected to follow the consolidated tradition of the city's historical pageant. As of now, the Corteo Barocco Association of Noto has not yet released the official date or program. The usual gathering of Sicilian historical groups is expected, with flag-wavers, musicians, and performers in costume parading through the Baroque historic center. All details will be updated as soon as they are released by the organizers.
Noto can be reached by car via the A18/SS115 motorway; from the Noto train station, the historic center is a short distance away. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about an hour's drive away.
The parade enlivens the historic center along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, starting from Piazza Bixio and arriving at Piazza Municipio.
The event takes place in the city streets and is generally free to attend. It is recommended to arrive early to secure a good spot along the route.
