The patronal feast of Petrosino, blending faith, tradition, and community
The Feast of Maria SS.ma delle Grazie is the most significant event in the calendar of Petrosino, a town in the province of Trapani, in Western Sicily. Each year, during the final week of May, the entire community unites around its Patron Saint in a blend of religious devotion, cultural events, and local conviviality.
The festivities span several days, centered along Viale Francesco De Vita and Piazza F. De Vita, the heart of town life, as well as the Mother Church dedicated to the Virgin. Alongside the dense liturgical programโdaily masses, novenas, and prayer sessionsโthere are evening entertainment events designed for all ages: concerts, theatrical and comedy shows, performances by local dance schools, sports tournaments, and activities for children.
A central role is played by the food and craft stalls set up along the avenue, where visitors can sample local products and traditional Sicilian specialties. The evenings are dedicated to local cuisine, featuring couscous and traditional sweets like sfince, creating a festive atmosphere that attracts residents and visitors from neighboring towns in the Marsala and Mazara del Vallo district.
The most anticipated moment is the solemnity on May 31st: after the holy masses, the mayor performs the handing over of the city keys to the Madonna, followed by the procession of the statue of the Virgin through the main streets of the town. The day concludes with traditional fireworks, which illuminate the sky over Petrosino, sealing the deep and unbroken bond between the community and its Patron Saint.
The festivities in honor of the Patron Saint of Petrosino opened on Sunday, May 24th with holy masses at the Mother Church and the descent of the Virgin's statue. Throughout the week, Viale Francesco De Vita hosted stalls featuring local products and tastings, while the square served as a stage for a rich program of evening events. The highlight occurred on Sunday, May 31st, with the handing over of the city keys to the Madonna by Mayor Giacomo Anastasi, the solemn procession through the town streets, and the concluding fireworks display.
The festivities take place in the center of Petrosino (TP), between the Mother Church, Viale Francesco De Vita, and Piazza F. De Vita. The procession passes through Via Pio La Torre, Via Gianinea, Via S. Giuliano, and Via dei Platani.
Petrosino is located along the coast between Marsala and Mazara del Vallo. By car, it is accessible via the SS115. The nearest airport is Trapani-Birgi, approximately 25 km away. The reference train station is in Marsala.
Access to events, the procession, and square performances is free. Any purchases at food stalls are paid.
