About Monserrato Feast

In the Rione Ospedale district of Contrada, in the province of Avellino, the Feast of Maria SS. di Monserrato has for generations blended Marian devotion with the joy of a traditional village festival. The program alternates rosaries, sung litanies, solemn masses, a torchlight procession, and the parade of the sacred image through the district streets with traditional games, comedy shows, live music, and group dancing in the square. The event concludes with the traditional pilgrimage of the Madonna to the Serrone area.

The festival that lights up Rione Ospedale

Every spring, the Rione Ospedale in Contrada, a small town in the province of Avellino just outside the Irpinian capital, gathers for the Feast of Maria SS. di Monserrato. It is the community's first major religious and civil event of the year: for several days, the streets and squares of the district are filled with festive lights, stalls, songs, and music, while local life revolves around the church and the sacred image of the Madonna.

A Marian devotion rooted in Irpinia

The cult of Maria SS. di Monserrato, which recalls the ancient devotion to the Madonna of Montserrat that spread across Southern Italy during the Spanish era, is a strong element of identity in Contrada: the parish itself is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist and Saint Mary of Monserrato. The festival is therefore not just a date on the liturgical calendar, but a moment when multiple generations reunite, emigrants return to the village, and district families mobilize for setup, fundraising, and welcoming pilgrims.

The religious program

The devotional aspect marks the entire event and remains the heart of the festival. In the days leading up to the solemnity, the following take place:

  • Holy Rosary and sung litanies in the late afternoon, followed by Holy Mass and the supplication to the Madonna
  • The torchlight procession, which reached its twenty-seventh edition in 2025, reaching the district church and concluding with a Eucharistic celebration
  • The solemn procession with the sacred image of Maria SS. di Monserrato through the streets of the district, the most attended event of the entire festival
  • The pilgrimage of the Madonna to the Serrone area, which traditionally closes the festivities

Games, comedy, and music in the square

Alongside the liturgical program runs the civil one, curated by the organizing committee and designed for all ages. Afternoons open with traditional games for adults and children, often in teams, in Piazza Carlo Villa; evenings are dedicated to entertainment, featuring dance school performances, group dances and DJ sets, comedy nights with well-known names from Neapolitan cabaret, and concerts of pop and neomelodic music in Piazza Valle. There is no shortage of tastings of local products and the brass band music that accompanies the solemn day.

Who organizes the festival

The event is promoted by the Maria SS. di Monserrato and Saint Michael the Archangel Association together with the Saint John the Baptist and Saint Mary of Monserrato Parish. The same association also manages the festivities in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel, the other major devotional event in Contrada: two festivals that, together with the autumn chestnut festival, define the village's calendar of traditions.

Contrada, between Avellino and the Irno Valley

Contrada has just over three thousand inhabitants and is nestled on the slopes that descend from the Irpinian capital toward the Irno Valley, in a territory of chestnut groves and small villages. A festival like that of Maria SS. di Monserrato captures the soul of this part of inland Campania: faith lived in a communal form, simple hospitality, and the square as a meeting place. For those visiting Irpinia in spring, it is the perfect opportunity to see an authentic patronal feast up close, far from mass tourism circuits.

Monserrato Feast — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Feast of Maria SS. di Monserrato took place in Contrada from April 10 to 13, in the Rione Ospedale district. Four days of solemn festivities organized by the Maria SS. di Monserrato and Saint Michael the Archangel Association, featuring traditional games, a performance by the Max and Very Dance school, group dances with DJ Marmy, a comedy show by Ditelo Voi, music by Three of The Pop, the solemn Sunday procession, and the final pilgrimage to Serrone.

The first major religious and civil event of 2026 for Contrada was the Feast of Maria SS. di Monserrato, celebrated in the Rione Ospedale from Friday, April 10 to Monday, April 13, 2026. It was organized, as per tradition, by the Maria SS. di Monserrato and Saint Michael the Archangel Association.

The festival opened on Friday afternoon with traditional games for adults and children, followed in the evening by dance and music. Saturday was dedicated to entertainment, with the well-established comedy show by Ditelo Voi and a musical performance by the group Three of The Pop.

The most anticipated moment arrived on Sunday, with the solemn procession of the sacred image of Maria SS. di Monserrato through the streets of the district, followed by a large crowd. On Monday, the festivities closed with the pilgrimage of the Madonna to the Serrone area, an event that every year seals the festival in the spirit of Irpinian popular devotion.
