The procession ascending to the cave in the Alburni Mountains, held on the first Sunday of May

The Feast and Pilgrimage of Saint Elijah the Prophet is the most iconic celebration of Postiglione, a village in the province of Salerno, Campania, overlooking the Alburni Mountains. Every year, on the first Sunday of May, the community gathers at the mother church for religious services before accompanying the statues of Saint Elijah, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, and Saint Michael the Archangel toward the mountains.
Around 10:00 AM, the procession sets off along the nature trail named after the prophet, reaching the Cave of Saint Elijah, where Mass is celebrated. This is no simple town procession; it is a true mountain pilgrimage, with the faithful walking the path that connects the village to the rock sanctuary. This is why in Postiglione it is referred to as a "pilgrimage" rather than just a parade.
The cave opens at an altitude of about 900 meters: it is a karst cavity that has been an important pilgrimage site for centuries for the inhabitants of Postiglione and neighboring towns. The official cult dates back to the mid-16th century, when the Carmelites consecrated the site to the prophet Elijah—a figure considered the spiritual origin of the order—and simultaneously spread devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which remains deeply rooted in the village today.
In November 2024, the Cave of Saint Elijah was included in the shortlist of Italian candidates for the European Heritage Label, a recognition that brought this heritage, previously known mostly at a local level, to national attention. "We worked hard to reach this prestigious candidacy," commented Mayor Carmine Cennamo.
The devotional route is also one of the most picturesque itineraries in this corner of Southern Italy. The nature trail leading to the cave continues uphill toward Colle Medoro and La Nuda, one of the highest peaks of the Alburni massif, offering panoramas that, on clear days, stretch from the Amalfi Coast to Capri, and from the Cilento region to the mountains of Basilicata.
The day is not just about liturgy. Along the path and upon returning to the village, traditional Marian songs, passed down from generation to generation, echo through the air. The community offers pilgrims typical sandwiches with wild asparagus frittata, the symbolic product of spring in the Alburni. It is a gesture of hospitality that speaks volumes about the character of this festival: participatory, popular, and welcoming to visitors.
The Saint Elijah Feast traditionally opens the event calendar for the Municipality of Postiglione, which throughout the year hosts festivals of local products, dialect reviews, outdoor cinema, exhibitions in the Norman Da Procida castle, and the "Strettule" food and wine event, which transforms the houses of the historic center into taverns. The municipal administration promotes the village as a laboratory for sustainable tourism in inland areas, with offerings ranging from trekking and mountain biking to climbing and rafting.
Those arriving in Postiglione on the first Sunday of May will find something that goes beyond a religious event: a community that, for an entire day, travels on foot toward its sacred mountain. The combination of ancient ritual, karst landscape, and views over the gulf makes the Pilgrimage of Saint Elijah one of the most authentic experiences in inland Campania, far from the beaten tourist paths of the coast.
At the time of writing, no official dates have been published for the 2026 edition of the Feast and Pilgrimage of Saint Elijah the Prophet in Postiglione, province of Salerno. However, the recurrence has followed a stable calendar for centuries: the main celebration falls on the first Sunday of May, preceded in recent editions by several days of pilgrimages and prayer moments.
The traditional schedule includes the gathering of the faithful at the mother church, the departure of the procession around 10:00 AM along the Saint Elijah nature trail, Mass at the cave, the return of the statues to the village in the afternoon, and, in the evening, the escorting of the sacred images to the sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
We recommend checking dates and times on the official channels of the Municipality of Postiglione and the parish before planning your trip: this page will be updated as soon as the 2026 program is made public.
Recurring elements of the tradition: details for the 2026 edition have not yet been released.
Postiglione is located on the slopes of the Alburni Mountains, in the province of Salerno. By car, it can be reached via the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, taking the Sicignano degli Alburni exit and continuing along the provincial roads toward the town center. The reference railway stations are on the Battipaglia–Potenza line; the nearest airport is Salerno–Costa d'Amalfi.
The walk to the cave takes place on a mountain trail: trekking shoes or sturdy closed-toe shoes with a good grip, water, and sunscreen are essential. The departure is early in the morning from the historic center; in May, temperatures at higher altitudes can be cool, so it is best to bring a light jacket. Parking in the village and walking up with the procession is the best way to experience the day.
Participation in the festival and the pilgrimage is free and open to everyone.
