About Ballarija

Every August, Controne, a small village in the Alburni mountains near Salerno, becomes a vibrant meeting point for dancers and musicians dedicated to Southern Italian folk traditions. Ballarija brings five days of workshops, masterclasses, and dance concerts to Piazza Umberto I, featuring Campanian tammurriata, tarantella from the Gargano and Pollino regions, pizzica from the lower Murgia, Sicilian ballettu, and Greek dances. Evening concerts are free, and the dancing continues late into the night in a convivial atmosphere that welcomes both curious newcomers and seasoned experts.

A folk dance festival in the heart of the Alburni

Ballarija - Mediterranean Dance and Music Festival is the event that transforms Controne—a village of just a few hundred residents in the province of Salerno—into an open-air dance floor every August. Launched in 2023 by the Echi del Mediterraneo APS association, under the artistic direction of Maria Grazia Altieri and with the patronage of the Municipality of Controne, the festival has rapidly grown into one of the most anticipated folk revival events in Campania.

The name says it all: ballarija evokes the very act of dancing together, with no stage separating the musicians from the dancers. This is the formula that has captivated enthusiasts from all over Southern Italy and beyond, drawn to Controne more by word-of-mouth than by advertising.

The formula: learn by day, dance by night

The typical day at Ballarija follows a precise rhythm. Mornings and afternoons are dedicated to workshops and masterclasses led by masters and tradition-bearers from various Mediterranean areas: participants work on steps, drum rhythms, body awareness, and the connection with their dance partner. In the evening, starting at 10 PM, the square fills up for dance concerts, which often continue past midnight with free-form jam sessions where anyone can bring their own instrument and join in.

This is not a show to watch from a seat: folk dance at Ballarija is a participatory experience, and beginners are welcomed just as warmly as those who have been dancing for twenty years. The program also includes workshops for children (by reservation) and "movement encounter" sessions led by Giovanni Labate.

Traditions represented

The program changes every year but maintains a distinctly Mediterranean vocation, bringing together repertoires that rarely meet on the same stage:

  • Campania — tammurriata and the ballo sul tamburo from the Vesuvius, Nocera-Sarno, and Monti Lattari areas
  • Puglia — tarantella from Carpino (Gargano) and pizzica from the lower Murgia
  • Calabria and Basilicata — the sonu a ballu from the southern Aspromonte and the pastoral tarantella from the Pollino
  • Sicilia — the ballettu and repertoires from the island's interior
  • Sardinia and the Balkans — featured in past editions with Sardinian dances and Balkan rhythms
  • Greece — traditional circle dances, acting as a natural bridge to the other side of the Mediterranean

Controne, the host village

Controne sits on the slopes of the Alburni Mountains, overlooking the Calore River valley at the gateway to the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. It is a village known primarily for the Controne bean, a local gastronomic specialty, and for an urban layout of alleys and small squares that becomes an integral part of the festival's scenery.

Piazza Umberto I, the heart of the event, offers the mountain skyline and the green valley as a backdrop: a setting that the organizers have always highlighted as part of the project, alongside the exhibitions, nature walks, and culinary offerings that accompany the evenings.

A cultural project, not just a party

Echi del Mediterraneo has been working in the region for years to promote folk traditions through projects like danzare la terra (dancing the earth) and collaborations with other associations in Campania. Ballarija is its most visible showcase: a festival that chooses to keep evening events free, to prioritize musicians who truly belong to the communities whose repertoire they perform, and to treat dance as a living practice rather than a museum piece.

For those visiting the Cilento and Alburni areas in August, it is a unique way to discover the inland Campania: not the crowded coast, but a village that spends five days singing and dancing.

Ballarija — edition 2026

The fourth edition of Ballarija expands to five days, from August 8 to 12, 2026, in Piazza Umberto I, Controne. The program, curated by Echi del Mediterraneo with artistic direction by Maria Grazia Altieri and the patronage of the Municipality of Controne, alternates morning and afternoon dance workshops, late-night dance concerts, and free-form jam sessions after midnight, featuring a journey through the Gargano, Aspromonte, Monti Lattari, Sicily, Pollino, Murgia, and Greece.

Ballarija 2026: the fourth edition

For the first time, the festival exceeds three days and extends over five days, from August 8 to 12, 2026. The formula remains the tried-and-tested one—learn by day, dance by night—but the geographical scope widens: each day is dedicated to a different cultural area of the Mediterranean, with tradition-bearers invited to teach in the morning and perform in the evening.

The event takes place entirely in Controne, in the province of Salerno, with its nerve center in Piazza Umberto I. Evenings are open to everyone and free; workshops, children's activities, and the closing lunch require registration.
